Join the Voice of the Residents

Residence Hall Association serves as the "voice of the residents." We are an organization that promotes a positive on-campus living experience through programming, legislation, biweekly meetings and community outreach. We encourage residents to make positive contributions and become outstanding student leaders within each of their residence hall communities.

Hall Councils

Each residence hall has a Hall Council you can be involved in. These Hall Councils hold elections for their executive board and committee representatives at the beginning of the semester. As a member of Hall Council, you can assist in planning programs within your hall, suggest improvements for dining services, and represent your hall at RHA meetings and events. If you are interested in these great opportunities, please speak with your front desk assistant, community assistant, or your area coordinator.

Committees

If you want to be in a leadership position that involves more responsibility than hall council, you can apply to be an RHA Committee Chair. All members of RHA are eligible to participate in this interview and election process. These positions will be filled in the fall semester during our General Assembly meetings, and in the spring semester by vacancy only.

The committee chair positions are described below. For questions regarding committees, please email RHA_VP@sfasu.edu.

Community Service

This committee organizes opportunities with the Nacogdoches community, such as canned food drives, an RHA team for Big Event, and volunteering at city events. This committee creates a great connection with Nacogdoches residents and helps RHA give back to the community.

Environmental Sustainability

If green is your favorite color, this is the committee for you! Through campus bike trails clean-up events, this committee creates a positive impact on the environment through fun activities.

Food Service

This committee is a great stepping stone to improving the campus dining halls and retail locations through the feedback of SFA students. Students are able to attend bi-weekly Food Service meetings and express their concerns and opinions to the directors and supervisors of SFA Dining Services. Please refer to the RHA master calendar for Food Service meeting information.

Fundraising

This committee organizes fundraisers that help fund RHA events, purchase new Hall Council resources and send the executive board to regional and national conferences.

Homecoming (Fall Only)

Go Lumberjacks! This committee meets during the fall semester to organize RHAs involvement in the annual homecoming celebration. Activities include hall decoration contests, Homecoming Day parade participation, and tailgating at Lumberjack Alley.

Housing Advisory

This committee is one of the best ways to make positive changes in your residence hall. Whether there is a need for additional washers and dryers or updates to a community kitchen, this committee makes recommendations for changes that promote a positive on-campus living experience.

Policy and Procedures

During RHA's bi-weekly Senate meetings, the Policy and Procedures committee recommends updates and improvements to the RHA Constitution and Bylaws.

Sports and Recreation

Fire up the barbeque and meet us at the football field! During football season, this committee organizes tailgating necessities, such as music, games, and food. This committee also hosts various events during the spring semester, including dodgeball, yoga nights, and intramural teams.

Events

RHA hosts various campus-wide programs such as Welcome Jacks, After Hours, Fall Fest, Holiday Extravaganza and Best Week Ever. These programs bring SFA students together from halls across campus. For information about upcoming events and meetings, please view our master calendar.

National Residence Hall Honorary

What is NRHH?

The National Residence Hall Honorary is the only nationwide organization that exclusively recognizes leaders in the residence halls. As a component of the National Association of College and University Residence Halls, the organization advocates for the interests and welfare of residence hall students, while also providing opportunities for their personal growth and development. NRHH is a leadership based organization comprising exemplary residential students who value service and recognition.

SFA's Richard J. Williams chapter of NRHH comprises the top one percent of student leaders. Members are inducted based on their contributions to the SFA campus based on the four pillars of NRHH – leadership, scholarship, service and recognition.

NRHH works with the RHA to hold a number of service events each semester benefitting SFA and the surrounding community. NRHH also runs a number of recognition programs in appreciation of outstanding residents and organizations, including the nationally-recognized Of The Month program. OTMs can provide recognition for a single leader, a group of leaders, or an effective program hosted by leaders, to congratulate and acknowledge positive accomplishments while encouraging continued effort and even greater achievement.

Of-the Months

An OTM, or Of-The-Month, is a formal recognition essay, in which the writer nominates a person, group, or program to be considered for acknowledgement at the campus, regional, and NACURH levels.

OTMs provide much-needed recognition for the valuable efforts and contributions of the many student leaders in the residence halls. Whether recognizing a single leader, a group of leaders, or an effective program hosted by leaders, an OTM serves to congratulate and acknowledge the positive accomplishments while encouraging continued effort and even greater achievement.

NRHH Colors and Logo

The colors of NRHH are blue and white. The blue symbolizes loyalty to purpose and idea. The white signifies a blank page: a page on which a student writes the successes and experiences that fill their days in the residence halls. The diamond, the world's most precious gem, signifies the value and beauty one finds in the residence halls experience.  At the bottom of the diamond are interlocking links, the logo of the National Association of College and University Residence Halls.

If you would like to get in contact with NRHH, please email NRHH@sfasu.edu.

Welcome Jacks

About Welcome Jacks

Every year, the Residence Hall Association (RHA) selects 30-40 incoming freshmen and transfer students to join them in a week filled with bonding activities, college preparation and wonderful food.

All Welcome Jacks are mentored by Welcome Jack Leaders, who are experienced SFA students and RHA members who have spent at least one year here on campus. We are fortunate enough to a Welcome Jack: Welcome Jack Leader ratio of 4:1 that allows for more one-on-one connection.

During the Welcome Jacks program, students will hear from the Campus Police, Involvement Center, AARC/Library Services, and SFA Dining Services for various information, tips and additional resources. These students also will move into their fall housing assignments a week before school starts, assist in the campus move-in weekend, aid in planning the very first event held in the fall semester, called After Hours, and participate in our Casino Night portion of the After Hours event as game dealers and bingo announcers.

This program is free, but only if your student participates in ALL activities and events! There will be a charge of $40 to your e-bill at the beginning of the program, to cover the cost of arriving on campus early, but this charge will be removed at the end of the program for all Welcome Jacks who participate in all events.

After Hours

Welcome Jacks play a vital role in After Hours, a highly popular program during Jacks Back Weeks of Welcome. Welcome Jacks assist in organizing and volunteering our Casino Night portion for this event on a shift-based schedule. While we do require the attendance and participation of all Welcome Jacks for the event, we make sure to schedule short volunteer shifts so that the Welcome Jacks also can enjoy the event.
