Registration open for SFA's Kindermusik classes

July 8, 2009

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Parents of newborns through 7-year-olds can still register their children for any of the Kindermusik Adventure Camps offered by the Stephen F. Austin State University Music Preparatory Division Monday, July 27, through Friday, July 31.

Karen Greer and Erin Stephens Tang, certified and licensed Kindermusik teachers, will offer four different age-appropriate classes in which parents and children will play, learn, sing, dance, create and share in the fun of making music together, said Pat Barnett, director of the Music Preparatory Division.

"Kindermusik is an early childhood music and movement program based on the belief that every child is musical, every parent is the child's most important teacher, and the home is the most important place for learning to take root and grow," Barnett continued. "Each camp includes take-home materials so that the children and parents can continue this unique musical experience."

Caregivers and their newborns to 18-month-olds may participate in "Peek-A-Boo! I Love You!" from 9 to 9:45 a.m. In this camp, more ways to say "I love you" will be uncovered using American Sign Language, soap bubbles and parent-baby dances. Cost is $75.

"Creatures in My Backyard," for 18-month- to 3-year-olds, will be offered from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Children and their caregivers will learn about seeds becoming flowers, run and jump in rain puddles made from hula hoops, snack on whole wheat mini-waffles dipped in honey, and learn songs such as "Shoo Fly." Cost is $100.

Children 3 to 4 years are eligible for "On the Road Again," which will meet from 1 to 2 p.m. Playing "Eye Spy," finding shapes in clouds and taking imaginary trips in a bus named "Van Go" will highlight the children's musical experience. Parents are invited to spend the final 15 minutes of each class with the children. Cost is $110.

Five- to 7-year-olds can explore the exotic cultures of Germany, Japan, Africa, England and Mexico by attending "Around the World" from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Participants will learn the countries' local customs and play native instruments. Cost is $120.

A Flex Lesson registration form and more information are available on the division's Web site, www.music.sfasu.edu/prep. The deadline for Kindermusik registration is Wednesday, July 15. Questions about any of the programs offered by the Music Preparatory Division may be addressed to Barnett by e-mailing pbarnett@sfasu.edu or calling (936) 468-1291.
