SFA Wind Ensemble to present "Contempo"

April 13, 2010

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The SFA Wind Ensemble will present "Contempo," a concert of contemporary band music, at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 20, in W.M. Turner Auditorium on the SFA campus.

"Most of the pieces on the program were written within the last 10 years, and all were considered 'new' during their time," said Fred J. Allen, SFA director of bands and conductor of the Wind Ensemble. "We're even including a new edition of a John Philip Sousa march."

Under the baton of Dr. David W. Campo, associate conductor of the Wind Ensemble, the band will perform Joseph Schwantner's ". . . and the mountains rising nowhere."

"This monumental work creates an ethereal quality by using singing, whistling and crystal glasses to add to the sounds of the wind instruments," Campo said.

Quitman graduate student Amanda Holbrook will be the featured vocalist on "Angels in the Architecture," a piece by Frank Ticheli which opens and closes with the vocalist singing a beautiful Shaker hymn, explained Allen.

The Wind Ensemble will also play "Masque" by British composer Kenneth Hesketh.

The concert is a joint presentation of the SFA College of Fine Arts and School of Music. Cole Concert Hall is located in the Wright Music Building, 2210 Alumni Dr.

Tickets are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and $2 for students. For tickets or more information, please visit www.finearts.sfasu.edu or call (936) 468-6407 or (888) 240-ARTS.
