May 17, 2010

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Private music lessons and dance classes for children and adults, an adult piano class, Kindermusik camps for newborns through 7-year-olds and group piano sessions for middle and high school students are all part of the summer program offered by the Music Preparatory Division at Stephen F. Austin State University.

The FlexLessons offered by the division enable students to sign up for either four, six or eight private lessons in piano, voice, guitar, flute, harp, percussion, Suzuki and traditional violin, viola, cello, bass, and other instruments as requested, explained Pat Barnett, division director. "We recognize that families' summer schedules are full, so we offer a variety of flexible options between June 1 and Aug. 15.

"New this summer are dance/movement classes for adults and children," Barnett said. Heather Samuelson, SFA adjunct faculty member, will teach two different 8-session dance classes for adults from 11 to noon on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The jazz class will begin June 1, and the tap class starts July 20. Cost for either is $85.

Nine- to 11-year-olds can enroll in a "Move to Music" course taught by SFA dance professor Libby Rhodes from 3 to 4 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays beginning July 12. Cost is $65.

Dr. Ping-Ting Lan will offer an eight-week adult intermediate piano class on Mondays from 6 to 7:30 p.m., beginning on June 7. Cost is $115.

Middle and high school students can register for a four-session group piano ensemble and sight-reading class taught by SFA Professor Andrew Parr from 11 a.m. to noon June 21 through 24 and July 19 through 22. Cost for either session is $40, or $75 for both sessions.

Parents of newborns through 7-year-olds may enroll their children in Kindermusik Adventure Camps taught by certified Kindermusik instructor Karen Greer Aug. 2 through 6.

"Oh, What Busy Days!," for newborns to 18-month-olds and their caregivers will meet from 9 to 9:45; "Creatures at the Ocean," for children 18 months to 3 years, will meet from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.; "Confetti Days," for 3- to 5-year-olds, will meet from 1 to 2 p.m.; and "Tell Me a Tale," for 5-to 7-year-olds, will meet from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Tuition for the camps is $75, $100, $110 and $120, respectively.
