SFA Music Preparatory spring recitals under way; summer programs planned

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Students enrolled in private and group lessons offered by the Music Preparatory Division of the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music will perform their spring recitals beginning Saturday, May 4, in the Wright Music Building on the SFA campus.

SFA student teachers' students and Mario Ajero's piano students will kick off the performances at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Music Recital Hall followed by a performance by piano students of Missy Leppert and Yuki Kumamoto at 4 p.m. in the Music Recital Hall.

The Piney Woods Youth Orchestra, with Evgeni Raychev, conductor, and Brandon Pierce, student assistant, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Monday, May 6, in Cole Concert Hall.

Other performances include: string students of Jennifer Dalmas and Evgeni Raychev at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 7, in the Music Recital Hall; violin students of Brenda Josephsen at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 9, and at 6 p.m. Friday, May 10, in the Music Recital Hall; piano students of Ping-Ting Lan at 4 p.m. Saturday, May 11, in the Music Recital Hall; and piano students of Mary Cooper at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 12, in the Cole Concert Hall.

Also performing in the spring recital line-up is the Piney Woods Chorale, with Nicole Stewart, director, and Shelby Tillery, assistant director, at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 16, in Cole Concert Hall. The final two performances will feature the piano students of Linda Parr at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 18, in Cole Concert Hall, and the violin and viola students of Melissa Nabb performing at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 19, in the Music Recital Hall.

All recitals are open to the public.

The Music Prep Division will offer a number of summer programs, including the Kindermusik Adventure Camps June 10 through 14. A variety of programs for all ages from newborns to 7-year-olds, taught by Karen Greer, will educate and entertain children. Registration deadline is June 3. The camps will meet at the Music Prep House on Raguet Street.

Harp classes for children and adults with Emily Mitchell, harp teacher for the SFA School of Music and Music Prep, along with private harp lessons, are also offered this summer. The harp ensemble classes are limited to four students each. The class for children is "Harp for Fun," and the class for adults is "Harp for Joy." These classes will also meet at the Music Prep House on Raguet Street.

Summer adult piano classes are open to intermediate piano students. The class will meet from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Mondays, July 8, 15, 22, 29 and Aug. 5, in the Griffith Fine Arts Building on the SFA campus. Tuition for the five-week class is $75.

The Music Discovery Camp, planned for Aug. 5 through 9 under the direction of Nicole Stewart, will be held at the Music Prep House. The camp is for children in second through sixth grade.
