Swingin' Axes and Aces to perform music of jazz greats

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and School of Music will present the Swingin' Axes and Swingin' Aces jazz bands in concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, in Cole Concert Hall in the Wright Music Building on the SFA campus.

Under the direction of Dr. Gary Wurtz, professor of trumpet and jazz studies at SFA, the Swingin' Axes will perform Ray Brown's "Double Fault Blues," Gordon Goodwin's "Count Bubba" and "Act Your Age," Chick Corea's "500 Miles High" "and a burning arrangement of the jazz standard, 'Tenderly,'" Wurtz said.

The Swingin' Aces' program will feature "A Little Blues, Please" by Sammy Nestico, the new "Plunger Power" by Doug Beach and "North Africa" by Chick Corea and arranged by Mike Tomaro, according to Dr. Deb Scott, professor of trombone and jazz studies at SFA and director of the Swingin' Aces.
