Parents & Family Members

Greetings from Nacogdoches!

As a Lumberjack parent or family member, we hope that Orientation Programs serves as a helpful resource for you, offering support, and a centralized location for updates on ways to enhance you and your student's experience at SFA. Whether your student is a first-generation college student or the second student in your family to attend college, we are excited to serve you and provide insight on coaching your student to success.

Parents and family members are encouraged to attend Lumberjack Orientation with their student. Reservations for each of the five Lumberjack Orientations and four Transfer Lumberjack Orientation sessions are taken in the order that they are received. In order to process parent/family reservation, your student should include your reservation when registering in mySFA and include the appropriate parent/family member payment. If your student has already registered for an Orientation session, and you wish to be added to the reservation, an Additional Parent & Family Member form should be submitted.

Parent & Family Member Fees
For Lumberjack Orientation, fees cover lodging on Thursday night (for parent/family members staying on-campus), meals, refreshments during the Last Chance Resource Fair with university administration and staff members, publications and materials, and other administrative operating costs. Parents and family members staying on-campus during Lumberjack Orientation will be assigned a room in our Lumberjack Lodge residence hall.

For Transfer Lumberjack Orientation, these fees include lunch, publications and materials, and administrative operating costs. If paying for your Orientation reservation with a check, please make your check or money order payable to Stephen F. Austin State University.

Parent & Family Member Service Project Opportunity

Lumberjack Orientation and Transfer Lumberjack Orientation attendees have the opportunity to give back to the SFA community while at Orientation! Consider helping us reduce food insecurity at SFA by donating to The Pantry, our on-campus student food pantry. Non-perishable food items and drinks are always accepted and will directly benefit the SFA student community.

"We loved the way every single person we heard or talked to seemed to genuinely care about every student here - that's awesome and that is why we have two Lumberjacks in our family (and hopefully two more)"

"I am very pleased with all of the staff. The student orientation leaders were wonderful. I would encourage every parent to attend."

"This is my first visit to SFA and I am very positive and sure my son will fit in here."

Guest spaces are available should you desire to stay on-campus for the night your student is attending Lumberjack Orientation. The cost is $30 per parent/family member staying in university housing in addition to the $80 Orientation fee ($110 total per person). The off-campus Orientation fee does not include the cost of your lodgings. Off-campus lodging reservations are the responsibility of the individual.

An umbrella, comfortable walking shoes and other personal items will make your stay more pleasant. Dress is casual for all sessions. Parents/family members staying on-campus will be staying in a campus residence hall called the Lumberjack Lodge. You must provide your own bed linens - XL twin size sheets, pillow, towels, blanket, alarm clock and toiletries. In addition, you may want to bring a radio or television (basic cable is provided) to make your stay more comfortable.

Please note that parents and students will be staying in SEPARATE accommodations. Parent accommodations are in a suite style setting. There are four bedrooms to a suite. Two bedrooms are on both sides of the unit with a common living area adjoining the bedrooms together. Parents arriving without spouses WILL be assigned roommates of the same gender, with each parent having a private bedroom. Couples attending will be assigned to share a unit with another couple. More information about Lumberjack Lodge can be found here.

Please note: Lumberjack Lodge is designed to be similar to an apartment. Up to four guests will be assigned to a room.

If you prefer off-campus accommodations, a number of hotels are located in the Nacogdoches area. The website lists several hotels in the Nacogdoches area.
