SFA-Sponsored Exchange Programs

How to Apply for an SFA Sponsored Exchange

STEP 1 - Contact Exchange Coordinator

Follow instructions indicated by the contacts of the sponsoring college or department.

STEP 2 - Get Courses Approved for Transfer Credit

Courses that are not taken at SFA are considered transfer courses. In order to receive credit for a non SFA course, you'll need to fill out a Course Approval Form and have it approved by the Office of Admissions, your Advisor and Dean as well as your Study Abroad Coordinator. Students are recommended to have twice as many courses approved as they plan to take abroad in case first choice classes are not offered.

STEP 3 - Complete your SFA Study Abroad Application

The SFA Study Abroad Application is available in the Forms section of this website.

Note: You will have to stop by the cashier's window in the Austin Building to pay the $50 application fee (cash, check, or money order payable to SFA), you will need to present the program payment slip. Unfortunately we do not accept credit cards/online payment. If you aren't in town, you can mail the $50 SFA application fee to the Business Office. If you have studied abroad with SFA before, the application fee is waived.

STEP 4 - Apply to your Exchange Program

Make sure you know your Exchange Program's deadline and follow their instructions carefully.

If you plan to use Financial Aid for your semester abroad, please read the Financial Aid section and submit the appropriate forms to your Financial Aid advisor and Study Abroad Coordinator.

Step 5 - Apply for your Student Visa

In many countries students are required to obtain a visa in order to study for a summer, semester, or year. A "Visa" is a stamp of approval usually put inside your passport giving you permission to enter the country for the length of time permitted. You will first need a valid passport in order to apply for a Visa, so make sure you have a valid passport before applying for a Visa.

As a student, it is your responsibility to find out what documents you are required to submit to the embassy or consulate and to follow all necessary steps to obtain the appropriate visa or residence permit. Allow adequate time to obtain a visa to travel abroad.

STEP 6 - Take care of Holds and Attend Pre-Departure Session

Please make sure you do not have any holds that will prevent us to request your Study Abroad Placeholder and/or award you the study abroad scholarship.

The pre-departure orientation is usually held in late Spring. You will receive an invitation by email.

STEP 7 - Study Abroad!

Please keep us posted while abroad of any changes related with your courses. Let us know how you are doing!

STEP 8 - Request Transcripts from Provider Program

Verify with your Provider Program that your transcripts are sent to the SFA Office of International Programs (404 Aikman Drive, Room 402, Nacogdoches, Texas-75962).

STEP 9 - Complete Program Evaluation

Submit your program evaluation through Abroad 101, you will receive an email with instructions shortly after your return date.
