NACOGDOCHES, Tex.-Due to the success of Stephen F. Austin State University's inaugural May-mester session in 2008, a 12-day term will be offered again this summer. The May-mester session will begin on May 18 and end June 3.

"We were delighted with the success of our first May-mester," said Dr. Richard Berry, provost and vice president for academic affairs. "Students and faculty rated May-mester as an excellent academic experience. Students enjoyed being able to focus all their energy on a single class and completing the class in just a little more than two weeks. Faculty reported enjoying the extended class hours and the intensity and energy that developed in the classroom."

Three-hour courses during May-mester meet weekdays for 3 hours and 15 minutes each day, and some online courses are being offered. Because of the intensity of May-mester courses, students will be allowed to enroll in no more than four hours of coursework.

Regular summer sessions will begin June 8, with classes meeting Mondays through Thursdays. Although classes will not meet on Fridays, university offices will be open during regular business hours.

Final exams for the first summer session classes begin at SFA on June 8 and continue through July 9, and Summer II begins July 14. Final exams for the second summer session are scheduled for Friday, Aug. 15.

According to Berry, online course offerings for the summer also have expanded, allowing students the convenience and flexibility of earning credit while away from campus during the summer months.

"SFA faculty members are working hard to make use of online course delivery primarily to better meet student needs," Berry said. "This is all part of our effort to become an ever more learner-centered university."
