NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - As part of its monthly independent film series, the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Art will present a free, one-night screening of "Visual Acoustics: The Modernism of Julius Shulman" at 7 p.m. Friday, May 3, at The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House in downtown Nacogdoches.

Narrated by Dustin Hoffman, "Visual Acoustics" celebrates the life and career of Julius Shulman, "whose images brought modern architecture to the American mainstream," according to information at www.juliusshulmanfilm.com.

Shulman, who died in 2009, captured the work of nearly every modern and progressive architect since the 1930s, including Frank Lloyd Wright, Richard Neutra, John Lautner and Frank Gehry.

"This unique film is both a testament to the evolution of modern architecture and a joyful portrait of the magnetic, whip-smart gentleman who chronicled it with his unforgettable images," the website says.

"Visual Acoustics," which is directed by Eric Bricker, won numerous awards for best documentary at film festivals across the nation, including the Austin Film Festival.

The First Friday Film Series is a presentation of the SFA Art Galleries, the Friends of the Visual Arts and the Nacogdoches Junior Forum.
