The Department of History will host Dr. Patrick Manning, Professor Emeritus of World History at the University of Pittsburgh and the former president of the American Historical Association.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas -Dr. Patrick Manning, who serves as the Andrew W. Mellon Professor Emeritus of World History at the University of Pittsburg, will visit Stephen F. Austin State University this month for a reception and public lecture.

A former president of the American Historical Association, Manning is considered among the most prominent historians on African history, the African diaspora and global migrations. During his lecture, "The African Diaspora: Teaching About the Black Experience Worldwide," Manning will discuss the African migration to the Americas, Europe and Asia during the past five centuries and how that migration has enriched cultures worldwide.

"The lecture combines stories of Black history in the Mississippi Valley, South America, Africa and Asia to provide a picture of conflict and change in the modern world," Manning said.

SFA's Department of History will host a reception for Manning from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 22, at the Old University Building located at 411 N. Mound St. Light refreshments will be served.

The lecture will take place beginning at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 23, on the campus of Stephen F. Austin State University, Dugas Liberal Arts North, Room 102.
