NACOGDOCHES, Texas – “An Evening of Fingerstyle Jazz Guitar with Sean McGowan” takes place at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 27, in Cole Concert Hall on the campus of Stephen  F. Austin State University.

McGowan will perform a selection of original compositions and classic jazz standards from his critically acclaimed solo guitar recordings. Songs by great American composers Thelonious Monk, Duke Ellington, George Gershwin, Alan Jay Lerner and  Frederick Loewe and many others will be featured.

"Over the years and throughout my journey as a fingerstyle jazz guitarist, I have been inspired by luminaries of the instrument such as Joe Pass, Tuck Andress, Lenny Breau and Earl Klugh,” McGowan said. “I have also been deeply influenced and inspired by vocal groups such as Take 6, and pianists such as Oscar Peterson, George Cables and Thelonious Monk. I had the opportunity to record an album featuring all Thelonious Monk compositions arranged for solo guitar as a result of an artist fellowship residency at the Ucross Foundation.”

McGowan’s recordings have also featured the music of the classic stage production and movie  "My Fair Lady" (Lerner & Loewe) and songs chosen from the great American songbook. He is currently working on a new recording, "Portmanteau," which will showcase the diversity and possibilities of repertoire arranged for solo fingerstyle guitar.

McGowan will also conduct a master class with Greer’s guitar students, and any interested SFA students, at 3 p.m. Thursday, April 27, in Cole Concert Hall.
