Who We Are

The Axes and Embers Barbecue Competition Team is spearheaded by Chef Todd Barrios.
Axes and Embers began in the summer of 2024. Due to the lack of a collegiate barbecue circuit in East Texas, Axes and Embers competes in professional and public competitions throughout East Texas and against teams with years of experience, world titles and Food Network connections. Many of the competitions are International Barbeque Cookers Association, or IBCA, sanctioned events.
Members of Axes and Embers learn the art of barbecue, the science behind the foods they cook, and the processes used to create a variety of cooked proteins utilizing student-created rubs and sauces. Students will gain knowledge pertaining to types of woods, including their flavor profiles and combustion properties.
Axes and Embers is a student-led organization dedicated to showcasing SFA’s unique culinary experiences to surrounding communities. We enhance our professional brand while providing students with valuable networking opportunities, mentorship and career connections.
