El Camino Real Jamboree

The Stone Fort Museum will host a day of traditional cooking demonstrations, live music and heritage handicrafts during the El Camino Real Jamboree from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 19. The event is part of a trail-wide celebration of the 20th anniversary of El Camino Real de los Tejas National Historic Trail. Plums were one of the many plants new to the Spanish as they traveled the trail. We’ll make a sweet treat out of this tart fruit, and share the history of food preservation.

The day begins with a jelly-making demonstration using native plums from the museum’s Spanish Colonial Demonstration Garden.

At 1 p.m., enjoy traditional old time acoustic music by the local band, Camino Real de Nacogdoches, and spend time at the heritage handcrafts table. Weave a bookmark at our makerspace and then visit the exhibit, Fabricating Fashion, inside the museum.

Bring your homemade sweet or savory preserves to enter a canned food cookoff with sweet prizes! Judging will take place at 1 p.m. and winners announced at 2 p.m. Read more information and see the sign-up form.

This event is being held in cooperation with Nacogdoches Historic Sites and the Nacogdoches Public Library’s Big Read event. The NEA Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest.
