A life-altering graduate degree

The Department of Biology at SFA offers three different Master of Science degrees, any one of which can provide opportunities to advance your understanding of the discipline and prepare you for a variety of rewarding careers.

Master of Science in Biology – thesis option

The thesis option is designed for students who plan to pursue doctoral degrees or enter positions involving research or scientific writing. This option requires 30 hours of coursework, including the completion of a thesis based on original scientific research.

Required coursework for the degree will depend on your interests and area of emphasis. Although a minor is not required, you may choose to complete a minor in a related discipline.

Master of Science in Biology – non-thesis option

The non-thesis M.S. program is designed primarily for students who are not planning to pursue a Ph.D. degree or who intend to seek an industry position or employment with a state or federal agency.

Students who choose the non-thesis program complete 36 hours of coursework in the area of emphasis that aligns with their interests and career goals. Although it is not required, students may also choose to complete a minor in a related discipline.

Master of Science in Biotechnology

The M.S. in biotechnology consists of a two-year course of study, including the completion of a thesis based on original scientific research. Required courses include:

  • BTC 555/555L, 557/557L, 558/558L, 559/559L and 563
  • 3 hours each of Thesis Research (BTC 589) and Thesis Writing (BTC 590)
  • 3 hours each of BTC 575 and BTC 576
  • 6 hours of electives from biotechnology, biology, chemistry or other appropriate fields

Prerequisites for the Master's in biotechnology include admission requirements for the Master's in Biology as well as the equivalent of one semester of organic chemistry, one semester of biochemistry and one semester of microbiology.

Graduate students who pursue thesis degrees are eligible for Teaching Assistantships that provide a stipend of $11,500 for a 9-month contract, with the option for additional summer salary.  For extremely competitive students, a limited number of Research Assistantships are available that offer higher stipends and associated research funds.
