The Biology Department's mission is to produce broadly-trained biologists with the skills and knowledge that will prepare them to succeed in the biological field of their choosing. The academic programs offered have the intellectual breadth and academic rigor needed to achieve this objective.

This mission aligns with the missions of the College of Sciences and Mathematics and the University. Specifically, our goals are as follows:

  1. Graduates will possess a fundamental knowledge of living organisms. This is accomplished through high quality teaching and maintaining a learner-centered environment in our classrooms.
  2. Graduates will possess critical thinking skills and be able to apply the scientific method to solve problems. These skills will allow our students to be life-long learners and prepare them for the ever expanding knowledge base in biological sciences.
  3. Graduates will appreciate and be able to describe the role that advances in biology play in our society, preparing them to be productive members of a global community.
