Celebrated artist Corral to serve as Texas National juror


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Artist Adriana Corral will serve as juror for the 27th Texas National, Stephen F. Austin State University’s acclaimed art competition and exhibition, which opens April 8 and runs through June 30 in The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House in downtown Nacogdoches.

Art patrons and community members will have an opportunity to participate in a “juror’s chat” session with Corral at 5 p.m. Friday, April 8, to be followed by an opening reception from 6 to 8 p.m.

SFA School of Theatre to present Shakespeare’s ‘The Taming of the Shrew’


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – A combination of bare-bones Brechtian and physical commedia styles is what theatre patrons will experience when attending the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Theatre’s presentation of William Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew.”

Exploring the social and economic perspectives of romantic relationships of the 17th century  laced with Shakespearian slapstick, “The Taming of the Shrew” will be presented at 7:30 nightly Tuesday through Saturday, April 5 through 9, in Kennedy Auditorium on the SFA campus.

SFA partners with Huntington Independent School District for paid internships


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s James I. Perkins College of Education has partnered with Huntington Independent School District to staff three paid internships per semester.
 
Set to begin this fall, the internships, paid by HISD, will allow SFA students to benefit from paid positions as they finish their clinical teaching requirements while providing HISD with the strongest of the SFA teacher intern candidate pool.
 

SFA Opera Theater to present ‘Gallantry: A Soap Opera,’ ‘Gianni Schicchi’


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Providing opportunities for voice students to perform on stage and preparing artist educators entering the teaching field are goals of the opera theater program at Stephen F. Austin State University.

The 2022 SFA Opera Theater will feature two one-act operas, “Gallantry: A Soap Opera” by Douglas Moore and “Gianni Schicchi” by Giacomo Puccini, along with the scene “Stomp Your Foot” from Aaron Copland’s “The Tender Land.”

Austin State University's Department of History will host a presentation featuring Dr. Stephen Taaffe, professor of history, on his recently published book, "Commanding the Pacific: Marine Corps Generals in World War II," at 6 p.m. April 5 in Dugas Liberal Arts North, Room 142.

SFA’s jazz bands to present ‘Swingin’ At The Brewery’ fundraiser


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Swingin’ Axes and Swingin’ Aces jazz bands at Stephen F. Austin State University will present their “Swingin’ At The Brewery” fundraiser from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, April 1, at Fredonia Brewery in downtown Nacogdoches.

Admission to the outdoor concert is free, but donations are encouraged to benefit the SFA School of Music’s jazz program, according to Dr. Deb Scott, professor of trombone and director of jazz.

SFA named one of top rural serving universities in the nation


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University has been named the No. 1 Texas university of its size as a rural-serving institution.

The Alliance for Research on Regional Colleges awarded the designation to SFA, also placing it No. 11 nationally.

SFA School of Theatre to present student-directed ‘She Kills Monsters’


NACOGDOCHES, Texas –The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Theatre will present the student-directed full-length play “She Kills Monsters” at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 25, and at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 26, in Regents Suite A in the Baker Pattillo Student Center on the SFA campus.

SFA construction management program names three alumni to the newly implemented external board


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — The construction management program at Stephen F. Austin State University is reinforcing its structure and goals with the establishment of an external board.

The board’s three inaugural members – John Glaze, Justin Jeffus and Calli Blankenship – were selected to provide insight on the construction industry, as well as help build the program into one of the nation’s best.

Works by Beethoven, Mozart to highlight SFA Symphony Orchestra performance


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Symphony Orchestra at Stephen F. Austin State University will perform works by Beethoven and Mozart when the student ensemble performs at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 25, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

Graduate assistant conductor Oliver Yan from Hong Kong, conducting student of Dr. Gregory Grabowski, will lead the SFA Symphony Orchestra for the complete performance. Grabowski is director of orchestral activity at SFA.

The orchestra will present Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Egmont Overture” and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Symphony No. 40.
