SFA to present 'Danceworks'


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin State University Dance Program will present "Danceworks," a concert featuring the SFA Repertory Dance Company and senior choreographic projects, Nov. 21-23 in the Lucille Norton HPE Complex Dance Studio, Room 201, on the SFA campus.

Directed by professor Stan Bobo and assisted by adjunct faculty member Heather Samuelson of the SFA Department of Kinesiology and Health Science, the concert will feature original works by faculty members, guest artist choreography and six senior dance majors' choreographic projects.

Piney Woods Camerata to perform music written for popular children's books


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music and the Cole Performing Arts Series will present the Piney Woods Camerata performing "The World of Eric Carle" at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 24, in Cole Concert Hall.

An American designer, illustrator and author of children's books, Eric Carle is most famous for the book "The Very Hungry Caterpillar," which has been translated into more than 50 languages.

Nacogdoches Railroad Depot to host third annual Loblolly Railroad Model Train Display


The Loblolly Railroad Model Train Display will be at the Nacogdoches Railroad Depot from Friday, Nov. 29, to Sunday, Dec. 15. The display includes a three-rail O gauge train and features two mainline loops of track, a figure 8 and a point-to-point trolley line.

SFA Wind Ensemble to present 'Sinfonietta'


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The SFA Wind Ensemble will present a concert titled "Sinfonietta" at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 25, in W.M. in Turner Auditorium on the Stephen F. Austin State University campus.

Featured work is the "Sinfonietta" by composer and pianist Ingolf Dahl.

"This is one of the true masterworks for concert band," said Fred J. Allen, director of bands. "It is a three movement piece of serious music written in 1961 by a German composer who admired the compositions of Igor Stravinsky."

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The SFA Friends of the Visual Arts board has established a scholarship in honor of Robert Kinsell, retired Stephen F. Austin State University School of Art professor.

SFA's student jazz ensembles prepare for final fall performance


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Swingin' Axes and Swingin' Aces, Stephen F. Austin State University's two student jazz ensembles, will perform their final concert of the fall semester at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 22, in the Ed and Gwen Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

The Swingin' Axes, SFA's premiere jazz band under the direction of Dr. Gary Wurtz, professor of trumpet and jazz studies, will perform a slate of exciting compositions that will "represent jazz dating back to Count Basie as well as some of the most cutting edge modern styles," according to Wurtz.

SFA's Orchestra of the Pines to perform popular classical music


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin State University Orchestra of the Pines will present "A Few of My Favorite Things" at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 19, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

The November concert program is one that the Orchestra of the Pines normally takes on tour, playing for thousands of high school and middle school students in an effort to recruit students to attend SFA, according to Dr. Gene H. Moon, director of orchestras.

SFA graduate student curates exhibition for Griffith Gallery


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Art will present the exhibition "Undefined Expectations: 1970s Era Prints by British Artists" from Nov. 14 through Dec. 13 in Griffith Gallery in the Griffith Fine Arts Building on the SFA campus.

An opening reception is planned for 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 14, in Griffith Gallery.

Taiwanese musicians to perform at SFA


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - "When East Meets West: An Evening of Taiwanese and Western Music" will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12, in Cole Concert Hall on the Stephen F. Austin State University campus.

The music group from Tunghai University (Taiwan) will perform works by various Taiwanese composers. With three voice professors, one cello professor and four piano professors from Tunghai University, the ensemble will perform different types of solo and duet presentations. Works will range from Taiwanese folk songs to contemporary music pieces.
