Cherryholmes, known as American's first family of Bluegrass, will present "Cherryholmes Bluegrass Christmas" at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 25, in W.M. Turner Auditorium as part of the Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts' University Series. The group was named the International Bluegrass Music Association's 2005 Entertainer of the Year, has received two Grammy nominations and performs regularly on the Grand Ole Opry.

SFA jazz bands to present joint concert


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Stephen F. Austin State University jazz bands, the Swingin' Axes and Swingin' Aces, will present a joint concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

Under the direction of Deb Scott, SFA assistant professor of trombone, the Swingin' Aces will open the concert with a varied program of works, including "Inside Out" by Matt Harris and "Basie's Buddy" by John LaBarbera.

"We will also play tunes the audience will recognize because of artists who have recorded them," Scott said.

SFA to open exhibition on Texas modernists


"The Old One," a 12.5" by 36" oil on masonite completed by Michael Frary in 1954, is included in "Texas Modernists: Selections from the Collection of Carl R. McQueary," which will open at SFA's The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House Friday, Nov. 21.

SFA Wind Ensemble to present concert


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and School of Music will present the SFA Wind Ensemble in its final concert of the semester at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 23, in W.M. Turner Auditorium.

The featured work on the program will be "Sinfonia in B-flat" by Amilcare Ponchielli, an Italian composer best known for his orchestral favorite "Dance of the Hours," explained Fred J. Allen, SFA director of bands and the Wind Ensemble's director.

A faculty member at Stephen F. Austin State University has been named executive director of the East Texas Historical Association, one of the largest regional historical associations in the nation.

SFA to host Showcase Saturday


NACOGDOCHES, Texas-Future college students will have the chance to experience a taste of college life when Stephen F. Austin State University hosts Showcase Saturday, an open house program, on Nov. 15.

Students will have the opportunity to speak with campus representatives, tour the campus and housing facilities, and preview programs that SFA has to offer.

SFA Symphony Orchestra to present inaugural concert

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - East Texans will have ample opportunities to enjoy the sounds of bluegrass, country, gospel and more as the Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts presents the Tony Award-winning musical "Big River: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" and "Cherryholmes Bluegrass Christmas."

The musical rendition of Mark Twain's classic novel, which features songs by legendary country artist Roger Miller ("King of the Road"), will open at 7:30 p.m. in W.M. Turner Auditorium on Tuesday, Nov. 18, and run through Saturday, Nov. 22.

SFA professor named coordinator of assessment

NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- Dr. Larry King, professor of communication at Stephen F. Austin State University, has been asked to coordinate assessment activities related to the university's reaccreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
