What are Language and Literacy Academias?

Working in partnership with deep East Texas school districts, Project Raices will host evidence-based training over the course of four Saturdays. These trainings, called Language and Literacy Academias, are for teachers, SFA teacher candidates, SFA faculty and parents/caregivers of English language learners. The LLAs are part of a U.S. Department of Education grant to equip East Texas teachers and parents with effective resources to help English language learners. The academies will focus on strategies to support effective instruction, broaden access to educational opportunities, and highlight the academic and cognitive benefits of multilingualism.

What should I expect to experience at a Language and Literacy Academia?

Each academia will feature a kermes, or carnival, where students, parents, and teachers will play bilingual language and literacy games. Additionally, musicians and artists will present cultural performances and host classes for parents and children. Teachers and teacher candidates will receive interactive instruction on ESL testing and ESL strategies while parents will receive information on how to connect with community resources and how to help their children in school. Children (grades K-5) of parents who attend are also invited to participate in game-based bilingual literacy activities all day.

Who is invited to the Language and Literacy Academias?

Applications are generally open from late February through the end of May. Accepted applicants are notified via email by late May or early June.

Directions/Parking:

  • If traveling north on North Street (Hwy. 59), you will pass the SFA campus on your right. Continue straight.
  • Turn right on East College Street then continue straight.
  • Turn left at the next stop sign on Raguet Street.
  • After passing the Forestry Building on the right you will see a large stone sign labeled Janice A. Pattillo Early Childhood Research Center. Pull into the parking lot and choose a space.
  • Enter the building through the main entrance in the front of the building.

The Janice A. Pattillo Early Childhood Research Center is #34 on the SFA Campus Map.

Payment Processes

Academia participants are entitled to financial compensation for their time and training. In order to be eligible and ensure prompt payment is received, all participants are responsible for inputting and updating their information in Payment Works, the SFA financial system. Invitations will be received by late September. If you encounter any issues with the payment works process, please contact us at raices@sfasu.edu as soon as possible to get these issues resolved.

¿Qué son las Academias de Lenguaje?

Trabajando en asociación con los distritos escolares del este de Texas, Proyecto Raíces organizará capacitación basada en evidencia durante cuatro sábados. Estas capacitaciones, llamadas Academias de Lenguaje (LLA, por sus siglas en inglés), son para maestros, candidatos a maestros de SFA, profesores de SFA y padres / cuidadores de estudiantes que están aprendiendo inglés. ¿Qué debo esperar en una Academia de Lenguaje?

Cada Academia tendrá una kermes, o carnaval, donde los estudiantes, padres y maestros jugarán juegos bilingües de lenguaje y alfabetización. Además, músicos y artistas presentarán actuaciones culturales y ofrecerán clases para padres e hijos. Los maestros recibirán instrucción interactiva sobre los exámenes de ESL y las estrategias de ESL, mientras los padres recibirán información sobre cómo conectarse con los recursos de la comunidad y cómo ayudar a sus hijos en la escuela. Los niños (grados K-5) de los padres que asisten también están invitados a participar en actividades bilingües basadas en juegos durante todo el día.

Las solicitudes generalmente están abiertas desde finales de febrero hasta finales de mayo. Los individuos aceptados son notificados por correo electrónico a finales de mayo o principios de junio.

Procesos de pago
