Big Bend provides unique learning experiences for SFA photography students


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – In the first field course that Stephen F. Austin State University School of Art has been able to offer since COVID-19 shut down the nation in 2020, SFA students traveled to Big Bend National Park in West Texas in May. They spent a week camping and photographing breathtaking desert landscapes before returning to campus to edit and print their images.

SFA marketing students educate campus about active shooter signs through Homeland Security initiative


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — In April, marketing students in Stephen F. Austin State University’s Rusche College of Business received funds from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to create a program for identifying and confidentially reporting the behaviors of a potential active shooter to help prevent attacks at SFA and in communities.
 
As part of a competitive funding opportunity to develop approaches to prevent targeted violence and terrorism, DHS awarded $2,000 to students in SFA’s advertising and promotion course to create the EnLight program.
 

SFA business students explore French industries through study abroad program


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Nearly 25 students from Stephen F. Austin State University’s Rusche College of Business spent 10 days in France learning about the management of bakeries, champagne houses, French fashion brands, chocolate production and more through SFA’s study abroad program.
 

SFA Gardens to host houseplant and succulent sale


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s SFA Gardens will host a houseplant and succulent summer sale 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 9 at the Pineywoods Native Plant Center greenhouse, located at 2900 Raguet St. The sale will feature succulents, cacti and houseplants of various varieties, plus a few other exciting odds and ends. This will be a much smaller event than the SFA Gardens semi-annual plant sales and will offer a very specific selection of plants intended for indoor or special care. Limited parking will be available at the PNPC greenhouse.

Graduate-level SFA social work students to present project proposal on local youth engagement


NACOGDOCHES, Texas –– Graduate-level students in Stephen F. Austin State University’s School of Social Work will present research in correlation with the 21/7 Association’s Youth Engagement Project at 5 p.m. Tuesday, June 14, in the C.L. Simon Recreation Center’s meeting room. Originally slated for May 5, the event was rescheduled due to severe weather.
 

Two new engineering degrees to be offered at SFA this fall


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Two new Bachelor of Science degrees will be added to Stephen F. Austin State University’s offerings in the fall. The Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering and Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering will be housed in the College of Sciences and Mathematics and taught by faculty members in the Department of Physics, Engineering and Astronomy.

SFA’s Stone Fort Museum to host event in support of Alzheimer’s Association


NACOGDOCHES, Texas –– Stephen F. Austin State University’s Stone Fort Museum will host the event “History All Day on The Longest Day” June 21 at the museum to raise funds and awareness for the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer’s Association.

Beginning at 8 a.m. and lasting throughout the day, the come-and-go event will feature a plethora of activities, including card games, blackberry cobbler cooking in a Dutch oven and traditional craft making. McWilliams and Son Heating and Air Conditioning employees also will be present to host a spinner game for attendees.

SFA Charter School named state’s second best of its kind


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s Charter School was recently ranked the second best charter elementary school in Texas by U.S. News & World Report. The high ranking also marks the school’s first appearance on the media company’s gold standard list.

SFA music alumni earn prizes at distinguished chamber music competition


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Alumni in the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music recently garnered prizes in the nation’s top chamber music competition.

Michael Chapa, who earned a Bachelor of Music in 2017, and José Barrientos, who earned a Bachelor of Music in 2014, won honors in the Fischoff International Chamber Music Competition held May 22 in South Bend, Indiana.

SFA Gardens to host Wild About Woodies event in July


NACOGDOCHES, Texas –– Stephen F. Austin State University’s SFA Gardens will host the annual Wild About Woodies event at 9 a.m. July 1 in the Brundrett Conservation Education Building at the Pineywoods Native Plant Center, located at 2900 Raguet St.
