SFA’s OMA graduates first 81 participants of its Diversity and Inclusion Certification Program


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — After canceling in-person ceremonies for more than a year as a result of the pandemic, a certification program started by Stephen F. Austin State University’s Office of Multicultural Affairs in fall 2019 recognized its first 81 graduates during a campus luncheon in April.

Held in the Baker Pattillo Student Center’s Twilight Ballroom, the luncheon recognized faculty and staff graduates from three semesters of the OMA’s Diversity and Inclusion Certification Program. Each graduate was awarded a certificate and a “Diversity Champion” miniature axe handle.

The perception of luxury was the focus of Stephen F. Austin State University professor Dr. Wenjing Li’s fifth publication, a cross-cultural study of purchasing habits among U.S., Chinese and Chinese-American consumers of high-end fashion goods.

The paper, “How counterfeit dominance affects luxury brand owners’ perceptions: A cross-cultural examination,” was co-authored with three other professors and appeared in the Journal of Business Research.

ROTC program at SFA competes at national military skills competition


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Stephen F. Austin State University’s ROTC program recently competed in the national Sandhurst Military Skills Competition in West Point, New York.

The Lumberjack Ranger Challenge Team competed among 44 teams of national Army ROTC programs and U.S. military academy companies, including the University of Georgia, Texas A&M University and the United States Military Academy.

Anglley appointed new SFA director of bands


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Dr. Tamey Anglley has been appointed director of bands for the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music.
 
Anglley will succeed Dr. David Campo following his announced retirement effective June 30 following this year’s summer band camps at SFA. Anglley said she is looking forward to “continuing the legacy and great reputation of the SFA School of Music and band program.”
 

SFA students to host plant sale on campus


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s horticulture program will host a spring plant sale from noon to 2 p.m. Thursday, May 6, and Friday, May 14, at the SFA Plantery, located at 1924 Wilson Drive.  

Selden’s work selected for display in Indiana


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Lauren Selden, professor of art at Stephen F. Austin State University, was the featured artist for April at Indiana University East in Richmond, Indiana.

Selden’s public sculpture titled “Charlie” is currently on display in Richmond. In an interview with Selden, she shares a look into her work, inspiration, creative process, problem solving and teaching philosophy in a YouTube video accessed at www.iue.edu/gallery.

SFA’s creative writing program receives top ranking


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Online learning platform Study.com has ranked Stephen F. Austin State University among its 2021 Best Bachelor’s Degrees in Creative Writing.

Over 40 million visitors per month use Study.com to research potential schools, degrees and careers. The Best Bachelor’s Degrees list helps users learn about universities and top programs like those offered at SFA.

Study.com compiled the list by considering hundreds of universities across the country and selected SFA based on academic and career resources, the quality of education, faculty, and more.

SFA Sylvans take top honors during Louisiana Forest Festival


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Following more than a year hiatus in competing due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Stephen F. Austin State University timbersports team, the Sylvans, made a triumphant return during the Louisiana Forest Festival, winning the collegiate portion of the event’s timbersports competition.

“Our team did a great job representing SFA and our programs,” said Dr. Jeremy Stovall, professor of forestry and Sylvans faculty advisor.

SFA’s May commencement to feature additional ceremonies


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University will hold seven commencement ceremonies for May 2021 to accommodate measures aimed at ensuring attendee safety.

May and August 2020 graduates are invited to participate in the May ceremony, and seating in the Johnson Coliseum will be adjusted to help ensure physical distancing. All attendees will be required to wear face masks.

SFA announces 2021 Teaching Excellence Award recipients


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Seven Stephen F. Austin State University faculty members recently were selected to receive Teaching Excellence Awards.

SFA’s Teaching Excellence program is an opportunity to recognize outstanding faculty members for their contributions to the university through excellence as teachers. Each of the university’s six colleges selects a member of its faculty to receive an award. One adjunct faculty member from among all colleges also is chosen.
