NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Children’s Performing Arts Series at Stephen F. Austin State University will open its 2017-18 season on Friday, Oct. 13, with a performance of the Virginia Repertory Theatre’s “Snow White & The Seven Dwarfs.”

This musical adaptation of the classic Grimm’s fairy tale comes to life with a talented ensemble of actors and wonderful puppets, according to Diane Peterson, Fine Arts Box Office manager and director of the series.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Houston bassist Dennis Whittaker will present a guest artist recital at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 5, in the Music Recital Hall in the Wright Music Building on the campus of Stephen F. Austin State University.

His performance is a feature of the SFA School of Music’s Calliope Concert Series and will highlight works by Francois Rabbath, J.S. Bach, Cesar Franck and other composers.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Omojo Percussion Duo will perform a guest recital at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 5, in Cole Concert Hall on the campus of Stephen F. Austin State University as part of the SFA School of Music’s Calliope Concert Series.

Oliver Molina and Joe W. Moore III will perform duo works by living composers. Their goal is to highlight living composers that are composing exciting and interesting works for the percussion duo idiom.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Art and the Friends of the Visual Arts will present a free, one-night screening of “Landfill Harmonic” at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 6, in The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House in downtown Nacogdoches.

“Landfill Harmonic” follows the Recycled Orchestra of Cateura, a Paraguayan musical group that plays instruments made entirely out of garbage. When their story goes viral, the orchestra is catapulted into the global spotlight.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University students in the School of Human Sciences recently met with Christina Balduf and Kinsey Jeffers, representatives from the East Texas Food Bank, to kick off a six-week Cooking Matters program.

A Stephen F. Austin State University expert on Texas politics and U.S. presidential elections will provide oversight for the academic integrity of SFA’s athletic programs.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas — The International Arts Series will kick off with a concert from Costa Rican musician Humberto Vargas at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 27, at the Cole Concert Hall on the Stephen F. Austin State University campus.

The series, hosted by the Department of Languages, Cultures and Communications, brings well-known foreign artists to campus each semester. The artists are from areas and cultures that represent the languages taught in the department: Spanish, French, German and Portuguese.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Dr. Linda Bobo, professor and director of the athletic training program at Stephen F. Austin State University, served as a volunteer medical staff member during the three-day Pan-American Cadet and Junior Championships in Costa Rica.

During the event, Bobo worked as an athletic trainer alongside three other medical staff members. Together, they were responsible for the care of 42 athletes ranging from ages 12 to 17.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas — While Stephen F. Austin State University is reporting a fall enrollment of 12,614 students, a 1-percent decrease from fall 2016, there are bright spots to be found in the enrollment numbers.

The highest first-time undergraduate retention rate for fall 2017 is 71.6 percent, representing a 4.3-percent increase during the past five years.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Creating costumes for a period play like Molière’s “Tartuffe” takes time, skill and a great deal of preparation. The best designers do extensive research before creating sketches or starting construction.

This past summer, Stephen F. Austin State University Professor of Theatre Angela Bacarisse happened to be in Europe with touring theatre students at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in Edinburgh, Scotland. She took the opportunity to visit France, as well, to do museum and gallery research for the School of Theatre’s upcoming presentation of “Tartuffe.”
