SFA's Office of Multicultural Affairs to celebrate Hispanic-Latinx Heritage Month with Noche De Gala


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University's Office of Multicultural Affairs is hosting Noche De Gala to celebrate Hispanic-Latinx Heritage Month from 7 to 9 p.m. Sept. 14 in the Baker Pattillo Student Center Regents' Suite A.

SFA to screen 'The Barkley Marathons' race documentary


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Art and the Friends of the Visual Arts will present a free, one-night screening of “The Barkley Marathons: The Race That Eats Its Young” at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 1, in The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House in downtown Nacogdoches.

House named new director of SFA School of Theatre


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – When Cleo House Jr. first stepped foot onto the campus of Stephen F. Austin State University, it was to attend the High School Summer Theatre Workshop presented by the School of Theatre. Little did he know as a young aspiring actor in the early 1990s that he would return to SFA in the summer of 2017 as the director of the School of Theatre.

Music composition of SFA graduate premieres in France, Ukraine


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Music composition students at Stephen F. Austin State University traditionally take bold steps, and it's paying off in bold ways around the globe.

Kyle Henkel, who graduated from SFA in May with a Bachelor of Music, had his composition "Kandinsky Imaginations" premiered this past summer at the 5th Zodiac Music Academy & Festival in the south of France. Three days later, the same piece got its second performance at the Bruno Maderna Competition Composers Forum in Lviv, Ukraine, by members of the New York City-based Phoenix Ensemble.

Uber event rescheduled due to weather conditions


An event celebrating the arrival of Uber services in Nacogdoches will be rescheduled for a later date, due to weather conditions in the area.

The ride-hailing service, common in larger cities, will begin operating soon in Nacogdoches. The event was originally scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Wednesday on the Stephen F. Austin State University campus.

SFA researchers study iconic, threatened turtle species of the Southeast


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — During one of the last cool mornings in May, an aluminum boat filled with four Stephen F. Austin State University researchers navigated a muddy waterway to a hoop net trap located under the drooping limbs of a streamside tree. As forestry graduate student David Rosenbaum balanced on the bow of the boat and hoisted the trap above the water, Dr. Christopher Schalk, assistant professor of forest wildlife management, released a shout of excitement as the wide, spiked, moss-covered shell of an alligator snapping turtle became visible.

Alazan Trio to perform works of Schumann, Brahms


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Alazan Trio at Stephen F Austin State University will perform romantic piano trios when the faculty ensemble presents a recital at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 8, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

Comprised of School of Music faculty members Jennifer Dalmas, violin; Evgeni Raychev, cello; and Ron Petti, piano, the trio will perform the music of German composers Clara Schumann and Johannes Brahms.

Formed in 2005, the Alazan Trio has typically performed and promoted music primarily by American composers, according to Dalmas.

Children’s Performing Arts Series offers exciting lineup for young audiences


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Children’s Performing Arts Series at Stephen F. Austin State University will once again bring fun, educational shows that entertain and inform East Texas youngsters.

The series, presented by the College of Fine Arts, features five nationally touring shows designed to engage audiences of all ages. Careful consideration is given to show topics, which always include teachable classroom elements, according to Diane Peterson, Fine Arts Box Office manager and director of the series.
