SFA employee receives commendation from U.S. Army


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — A Stephen F. Austin State University employee was honored recently with a Public Service Commendation Medal from the U.S. Army.

Sonnie Mosier, an administrative assistant in SFA’s Department of Military Science, received the medal, which is one of the highest public service decorations the Army gives to civilians. According to the Army’s website, the award recognizes “service or achievements that contribute significantly to the accomplishment of the mission of an Army activity, command or staff agency.”

SFA to screen ‘Valley Uprising’ film


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Art and the Friends of the Visual Arts will present a free, one-night screening of the documentary “Valley Uprising” at 7 p.m. Friday, June 1, in The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House in downtown Nacogdoches.

SFA Department of Mathematics and Statistics hosts math festival


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Sixth through eighth grade students from local schools recently spent the day at Stephen F. Austin State University exploring math with the help of faculty and students at the university’s first Julia Robinson Mathematics Festival, hosted by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.  

SFA’s Office of Research and Graduate Studies names two graduate award recipients


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s Office of Research and Graduate Studies awarded two honors to outstanding graduate students. Alyssa Abreu of Spring received the Marilyn Odom Graduate Student Award, and Chad Huckaby of Nacogdoches received the William R. Johnson Outstanding Thesis Award.

The awards are presented annually to recognize students dedicated to the pursuit of their graduate degrees and to honor the hard work put in to compiling thesis projects.

Locklin awarded Gary Parker Art Scholarship


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Friends of the Visual Arts scholarship committee at Stephen F. Austin State University has selected South Lake junior sculpture student Shelby Locklin as this year’s recipient of the Gary Parker Art Scholarship.

Jeff Brewer, assistant professor of sculpture in the School of Art, nominated Locklin for the award.

Garrett awarded Robert Kinsell Art Scholarship


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Chloe Garrett, a sophomore art student from Orange, is the newest recipient of the Robert Kinsell Art Scholarship awarded by the Friends of the Visual Arts at Stephen F. Austin State University.

Garrett’s primary focus is painting. Assistant art professor Shaun Roberts nominated her for the award.

Jentsch awarded Charles D. Jones Art Scholarship


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Sarah Jentsch has been selected as this year’s Charles D. Jones Art Scholarship recipient at Stephen F. Austin State University. Jentsch, a senior from Etoile, is studying printmaking in SFA’s School of Art.

Neal Cox, associate professor/printmaking coordinator, nominated Jentsch for the scholarship. She has been a student in several of Cox’s classes during the past two years.

Ornelas receives Gary Q. Frields Art Scholarship


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Friends of the Visual Arts at Stephen F. Austin State University have selected Aldo Ornelas, a graduate student in ceramics from Chihuahua City, Mexico, as this year’s recipient of the Gary Q. Frields Art Scholarship.

To be eligible for the Frields’ award, students must “demonstrate an exemplary work ethic, show versatility in the use of media and techniques in two or more areas, and show innovation and quality in their work,” according to the criteria established by Frields.

Langston awarded first William Arscott Scholarship


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Friends of the Visual Arts at Stephen F. Austin State University have selected Samuel Langston, a freshman from Lufkin, as the first William Arscott Art Scholarship recipient at SFA. Langston is studying filmmaking in SFA’s School of Art.

Jeff Brewer, assistant professor of sculpture, nominated Langston for the scholarship.

“I have had the pleasure of knowing and teaching Sam over the past year. He is a dedicated student and budding young artist,” Brewer wrote in his nomination letter to the SFA Friends of the Visual Arts.

SFA College of Business students receive scholarships through Career Success Passport Program


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University's Rusche College of Business awarded 44 scholarships totaling $50,000 to students in the Career Success Passport Program. The college awarded four $2,500 scholarships to top scholars and 40 $1,000 runner-up scholarships.
