Psychology graduate student wins Best Paper Award at SFA Graduate Research Conference


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — A graduate student’s investigation into attitudes and perceptions regarding handguns being allowed on college campuses has been named a winner of the Best Paper Award at the Stephen F. Austin State University 2018 Graduate Research Conference.

Longview native Hayden Holmes presented research he has conducted regarding Texas Senate Bill 11, which allowed for campus carry of licensed handguns for permit holders over age 21. Holmes wanted to better understand how the perception of handguns on campus affects daily interactions and classrooms.

SFA School of Art to present Daniel exhibition


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and School of Art will present an exhibition of work by former SFA art professor John Daniel showing May 10 through June 16 in Reavley Gallery in The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House.

A reception is planned for 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, June 2, at The Cole Art Center.

U.S. Sen. John Cornyn to offer commencement address - SFA to graduate largest class in university history


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — As Stephen F. Austin State University prepares to celebrate its 95th anniversary, it will graduate the largest class in university history with more than 1,500 candidates. Approximately 1,190 students will receive their bachelor’s degrees, and 335 students will receive their graduate degrees during this historic occasion.

Two ceremonies are scheduled for Saturday, May 12, in Johnson Coliseum with U.S. Sen. John Cornyn offering the commencement address.

SFA students raise more than $33,000 for Children’s Miracle Network


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — It began as a lofty goal: raise $23,000 for the Children’s Miracle Network. Many told them this couldn’t be done. Many suggested lowering their goal to a more feasible number. But after a year of fundraising, Stephen F. Austin State University students raised more than $33,000 through the annual Dance Marathon — surpassing their initial goal by more than $10,000.

SFA nursing students participate in disaster drill


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Senior students enrolled in Stephen F. Austin State University’s DeWitt School of Nursing put the skills learned in the classroom to use during a recent disaster simulation drill, evaluating and treating ‘patients’ and transporting them to safety.

The School of Nursing conducts the drills each fall and spring semester. Student leaders are elected by their classmates to organize the event.

“It prepares us to really think on our feet,” said Joshua Bliss, an SFA simulation team leader from Austin. “As nurses, we have to be prepared for everything.”

NACOGDOCHES, Texas — A former Ladyjack basketball player who has served in international accounting and marketing positions, including being a Homeland Security representative, was recently honored by the Stephen F. Austin State University Rusche College of Business.

SFA announces Texas Tribune event featuring local lawmakers


NACOGDOCHES — The Texas Tribune will host a free event featuring a conversation with Sen. Robert Nichols and Rep. Travis Clardy from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. May 7 at Stephen F. Austin State University.

Evan Smith, Texas Tribune CEO and editor-in-chief, will moderate the discussion, which will be followed by an audience question-and-answer session.

SFA senior receives Olds Family Outstanding Student Teacher Award


ACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University senior Bailey Freeman of Lufkin received the Olds Family Outstanding Student Teacher Award, which honors an exemplary student teacher each semester from SFA's Department of Elementary Education.

University field supervisor MaryAnn Bentley nominated Freeman for this honor, and a committee of five SFA elementary education faculty members, who reviewed teaching videos and additional materials, selected her to receive the award.
