NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Friends of the Visual Arts at Stephen F. Austin State University will award a newly established $1,000 scholarship this spring in honor of longtime art and filmmaking professor William E. Arscott.

Arscott, who recently turned 83, is SFA’s longest-tenured faculty member with more than 54 years teaching at the university. This scholarship is one of many the FVA has established to honor retiring art instructors. However, Arscott has no plans to retire soon.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The A Cappella Choir at Stephen F. Austin State University will present “Where Everything is Music” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 8, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

The program theme will examine the many ways in which music permeates and affects our everyday life, according to Dr. Michael Murphy, associate professor and director of choral activities in the SFA School of Music.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Choral Union and Women’s Choir at Stephen F. Austin State University will present the program “The Best of All Possible Worlds: A Bernstein Celebration” at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 6, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

The concert’s music celebrates the 100th birthday of Leonard Bernstein, who is “arguably the greatest, and most diverse, musical mind in our country’s history,” according to Dr. Tod Fish, associate director of choral activities for the SFA School of Music.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s SFA Gardens will host the monthly Theresa and Les Reeves Lecture Series at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 8, in the Brundrett Conservation Education Building at the Pineywoods Native Plant Center, located at 2900 Raguet St. Dr. Franta Majs, director of SFA’s Soil, Plant and Water Analysis Laboratory, will present “For Better Fruits, Vegetables and Landscapes, Test Your Soil.”

NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University psychology graduate student Stacey Kerr recently received the 2017 Marilyn M. Odom Graduate Student Award from SFA’s Alumni Association.

A native of Spring Creek, Nevada, Kerr said she is honored to receive this award. “There are a lot of talented and bright graduate students at SFA, and I am in awe to have been both nominated and chosen for such an award. I am grateful to the professors and my colleagues and family for their support in my desire to pursue higher education.”

NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Scientists and science students from universities across the nation will soon be wearing T-shirts designed by Lumberjacks.

Stephen F. Austin State University students won the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology’s national T-shirt design contest. T-shirts with the design will be sold at the society’s 2018 annual Experimental Biology meeting in San Diego in April.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University is one of the safest colleges in America, according to a recent report from the National Council for Home Safety and Security.

The council, a trade association comprising home security professionals across the U.S., based its report on data from the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting and the Campus Safety Security Survey.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas — More than four hundred high school students attended Stephen F. Austin State University’s seventh annual STEM Day Friday, exploring different areas of STEM through interactive faculty-led sessions, two STEM student panels and a physics magic show.

Students chose between twenty-three different sessions covering a wide variety of subjects, including chemistry, computer science, engineering, mathematics, forestry and health science.

Austin State University has canceled all public performances scheduled for the remainder of the spring semester in response to SFA’s decision to cancel or postpone all on-campus programs, gatherings and events until further notice due to concerns about the spread of COVID-19.
