NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Future college students will have the opportunity to experience a taste of campus life during a free, action-packed open-house Saturday at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches on March 28.

Prospective students will get to visit with university faculty and staff members, tour the campus and residence halls, and preview academic programs during the SFA Showcase Saturday event.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Mary Lou Retton, who catapulted to international fame by winning the All-Around Gold Medal in women's gymnastics at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, will be the featured guest at the 2015 installment of the Archie McDonald Speaker Series at Stephen F. Austin State University.

In addition to becoming the first American woman to ever win a gold medal in gymnastics, Retton won silver medals for team and vault, and bronze medals for uneven bars and floor exercise. Her five medals were the most won by any athlete at the 1984 Olympics.

Though most Stephen F. Austin State University students and faculty members are away for spring break next week, some facilities and operations will remain up and running.

Campus tours will be available and staff members from the offices of Admissions, Financial Aid, Residence Life, the Registrar's Office and the Business Office (Bursar) will be on standby in the Rusk Building, Room 206 throughout the break. Operations at the campus post office will not be interrupted during the break.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Art and its art galleries will host a closing reception for two exhibitions currently showing at The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House in downtown Nacogdoches.

A reception to close "Stuart Riordan: Sardines & Oranges" and "Beyond the Academy: Contemporary Outsider and Expressionist Art" will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, March 28, at the art center. Some of the artists are expected to attend.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Lumberjack Marching Band has put Stephen F. Austin State University in the national spotlight once again.

A video of the band's performance last fall at the Battle of the Piney Woods in NRG Stadium in Houston is among 10 videos selected nationwide of marching band performances that will be showcased during the College Band Directors National Association convention March 25 through 28 in Nashville, Tenn.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Agatha Christie's one-act play "The Patient" will be presented by the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Theatre at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 27, and at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 28, in the Downstage Theatre on the SFA campus.

Fairfield senior Eric Gibson directs the play in which a woman, Mrs. Wingfield, falls from a balcony, leaving her paralyzed and unable to speak.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Dr. Nathan Nabb, professor of saxophone at Stephen F. Austin State University, will perform selections from his upcoming performance tour of Taiwan and China when he presents a recital at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 26, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

Collaborating with him on piano is Dr. Chialing Hsieh, faculty piano accompanist at Morehead State University. The two are longtime duo partners, performing together regularly since 2005. They will present pieces by David Maslanka, Takashi Yoshimatsu, Richard Lavenda and Piet Swerts.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin State University Interfraternity Council will host the "Walk a Mile in Her Shoes" awareness event at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 7, at the Baker Pattillo Student Center on SFA's campus.

The SFA council has adopted sexual assault awareness as their philanthropy, and this year's event is the International Men's March to Stop Rape, Sexual Assault and Gender Violence.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Stephen F. Austin State University's chapter of the National Association of Environmental Professionals will host its second annual environmental symposium from 9:30 a.m. to 2:40 p.m. Saturday, March 28, in the Forestry Building, Room 117, on SFA's campus.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The paintings and sculpture of Felice House and Dana Younger will be featured in the exhibition "Re-Western" showing March 25 through May 2 in Griffith Gallery on the Stephen F. Austin State University campus.

Hosted by the SFA School of Art, the exhibition "views 'The West' through a post-modern lens that both challenges and honors this most American of genres," according to the artists' statement.
