Schmidbauer Competition bringing top musicians to SFA for Saturday event
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - When the contestants in the 2014 Schmidbauer Young Artist Competition take the stage Saturday, Feb. 1, in Cole Concert Hall on the Stephen F. Austin State University campus, it will be obvious the level of talent the competition attracts.
From performing in Carnegie Hall to serving as concertmasters for youth orchestras, each of the musicians who will perform at SFA on Saturday excelled at an early age and is already making headlines in classical music.
SFA Board of Regents approves faculty, staff changes
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin State University Board of Regents approved faculty and staff changes during its quarterly meeting Monday.
Staff appointments within two academic colleges were approved, including Kathleen Snyder, certification officer and post baccalaureate initial certification program manager in the James I. Perkins College of Education, and Robert Selden, research associate for the Center for Regional Heritage Research in the College of Liberal and Applied Arts.
Taylor, Oliver named Mr., Miss SFA
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Blake Taylor of Rowlett and Carla Oliver of Texas City were chosen as the 2014 recipients of the Mr. and Miss SFA Awards, presented by the Stephen F. Austin State University Alumni Association.
The Mr. and Miss SFA title is presented each year to exemplary students who best represent and promote the university. The Mr. SFA Award was established in honor of the late Stan McKewen, a 1934 SFA graduate. The Miss SFA Award was established in honor of Arnodean Covin, who was named Miss SFA in 1940, 1941 and 1942.
SFA School of Art to present Monica Maestrelli one-day exhibition
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Art will present "Monica Maestrelli, Jewelry by Design," a one-day exhibition and event from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 6, in the Ledbetter Gallery at The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House.
Student-directed "The Valiant" slated for SFA's Downstage Theatre
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Theatre will present the student-directed one-act play "The Valiant" at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 31, and at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, in the Downstage Theatre on the SFA campus.
Written by Holworthy Hall and Robert Middlemass, "The Valiant" will be directed by Fort Worth senior Darius Michael Moore. The plot concerns a man waiting in prison for execution, according to Moore.
SFA Charter School receives Texas Honors Circle Award from comptroller
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin State University Charter School is a recipient of the Texas Comptroller's 2013 Texas Honors Circle Award, which recognizes districts and campuses that achieve academic success through cost-effective operations. Award recipients achieve strong academic performance while spending relatively less compared to their fiscal peers.
SFA's Ina Brundrett Conservation Education Building officially opened
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin State University Board of Regents joined members of the administration, faculty, staff, student body and Nacogdoches community at a ribbon-cutting ceremony Monday, marking the official opening of the newly constructed Ina Brundrett Conservation Education Building.
SFA Wind Ensemble concert to feature TMEA performance preview
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and School of Music will present a performance of the SFA Wind Ensemble at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 4, in W.M. Turner Auditorium on the SFA campus.
The performance will feature a preview of the Wind Ensemble's concert to be performed before the Texas Music Educators Association's 2014 Clinic/Convention later in February in San Antonio.
Peter Raven Lecture canceled
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The "Conservation in a Rapidly Changing World" lecture scheduled for Feb. 4 at the Stephen F. Austin State University Pineywoods Native Plant Center has been canceled. SFA Gardens expects to reschedule the lecture by conservationist Peter Raven at a later date.
