SFA Gardens to host herbal soap seminar


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Elyce Rodewald, education coordinator for the SFA Gardens, will host a soap-making workshop, from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Nov. 5, in Room 118 of the Agriculture Building on Wilson Drive.

"Gifts from the Garden" participants will create a variety of herbal soaps, learn recipes and techniques of soap making, and take home samples of luxurious soap they make themselves.

SFA to sponsor Family Outdoor Adventure at state park


Nacogdoches Naturally will host a family field trip to Martin Dies, Jr. State Park beginning at 7:30 am. Saturday, Nov. 12. Nacogdoches Naturally is sponsored by SFA Gardens at Stephen F. Austin State University and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department in an effort to connect families with East Texas parks and recreation facilities.

SFA to host Showcase Saturday for prospective students


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Future college students will have the opportunity to experience a taste of campus life during a free, action-packed open-house event at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches on Saturday, Nov. 12.

SFA to screen 'Herb and Dorothy'


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - As part of its monthly independent film series, the Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and School of Art will present a free, one-night screening of "Herb and Dorothy" at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 4, at The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House in downtown Nacogdoches.

Megumi Sasaki's 2009 film focuses on Herbert and Dorothy Vogel, who managed to amass one of the most important collections of contemporary art in history with very modest means.

Photography exhibition of Rulfs architecture to open at The Cole Art Center


This photograph of the Emma and Robert Lindsay Home on Virginia Avenue is one of many photographs SFA Associate Professor Christopher Talbot has taken of Nacogdoches buildings designed by architect Diedrich Rulfs. The photographs are showcased in the exhibition, "The Legacy of Diedrich Rulfs: Architect of Nacogdoches," which will open at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 3, at The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House.

SFA music education professor to deliver lecture


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Mark E. Turner, associate professor of elementary music education for Stephen F. Austin State University, will deliver a lecture, "Artistic and Intellectual Character: What it is, why it matters, and how to get it," from 2 to 3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 4, in the Music Recital Hall (Room 160) of the Wright Music Building.

The lecture will present ideas from Project Zero, a research group from the Harvard Graduate School of Education that has been investigating the development of learning processes in children, adults and organizations since 1967.

SFA choirs present 'Impressions' concert


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Choral Union and Women's Choir of Stephen F. Austin State University will present a joint concert, "Impressions," at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 1, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

Both choirs will be performing secular and sacred songs that explore the themes of living, loss, and love as experienced through the senses, said Dr. David Howard, SFA associate director of choirs and the ensembles' director.

SFA and Baylor music faculty recital features quintets written for one-armed pianist


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Members of the Stephen F. Austin State University and Baylor University music faculties will present music by Franz Schmidt at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

Violinist Jennifer Dalmas, cellist Evgeni Raychev and clarinetist Christopher Ayer, all of SFA, will collaborate with Baylor violist Kathy Steely and pianist Kae Hosoda-Ayer in presenting Schmidt's two quintets for which the pianist uses only the left hand.

SFA Brass Quintet to give recital at Christ Episcopal Church


The SFA Brass Quintet will present a recital at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 6, in Christ Episcopal Church. The members are (from left), Assistant Professor J.D. Salas, Associate Professor Deb Scott, Associate Professor Gary Wurtz, Professor Charles Gavin and graduate student Cody Sturdivant.
