SFA Steel Band concert scheduled


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Stephen F. Austin State University's Steel Drum Band will present a program of pop, Caribbean and Latin favorites during its annual spring concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 30, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

The 10- member ensemble performs on a full set of steel pans (made from 55-gallon oil drums), an electric bass guitar, drum set and a large array of Latin percussion-or as they say in Trinidad, the "Engine Room," explained Scott Harris, SFA associate professor of percussion and the group's director.

SFA to host Family Issues Summit


Stephen F. Austin State University will host the Family Issues Summit at 9 a.m. Friday, March 26, at the Early Childhood Research Center on the SFA Campus.

Students, professionals, volunteers and anyone working with families are encouraged to attend. Several topics ranging from financial management to nutrition and health will be discussed.

SFA unveils permanent collection of Samuel Rothbort's art


Samuel Rothobort's granite "Smiling Face" is one of the pieces included in "Samuel Rothbort," which the SFA College of Fine Arts and School of Art will open at 6 p.m. Friday, March 26, in Griffith Gallery.

NACOGDCOCHES, TEXAS - The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and School of Art will open an exhibition of sculptures and paintings by renowned artist Samuel Rothbort at 6 p.m.

Guest tenor to perform at SFA


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Tenor Christopher Hollingsworth, assistant professor of music at Illinois State University, will present a guest artist recital at 6 p.m. Monday, March 22, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus. Admission is free and open to the public.

Performing with Hollingsworth will be pianist Ron Petti, SFA director of accompanying.

"We are pleased to bring Dr. Hollingsworth to campus," said Scott LaGraff, SFA associate professor of voice. "He will be performing a recital of classics, standards in the vocal repertoire."

Guest artists and faculty ensemble to perform at SFA


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and School of Music will present two recitals on Sunday, March 28, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

At 2:30 p.m., guest artists John Lane, percussion, and writer Ann McCutchan will present "Musically Speaking," a celebration of the art of combining spoken word and music in performance. Admission is free and open to the public.

SFA Wind Ensemble concert features guest conductor


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Dr. Milton Allen, director of bands at Eastern Illinois University, will guest conduct the Stephen F. Austin State University Wind Ensemble during its concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 26, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

Under Allen's baton, the ensemble will present Kenneth Hesketh's "Masque" and Pavel Tschesnokoff's "Salvation is Created."

SFA to present student-directed play by Horton Foote


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Theatre will present a student-directed production of "A Young Lady of Property" at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 26, and at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 27. All performances will be in the Downstage Theatre on the first floor of the Griffith Fine Arts Building, 2222 Alumni Dr.

The one-act play was written by Horton Foote, best known for his Academy Award-winning screenplay for "To Kill a Mockingbird."

SFA to present 'An Evening with Marvin Hamlisch'


The SFA College of Fine Arts will present "An Evening with Marvin Hamlisch" at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 23, in W.M. Turner Auditorium as part of the 2009-1020 University Series.

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - East Texans will have the rare opportunity to be entertained by one of the most highly acclaimed American composers when the Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts presents "An Evening with Marvin Hamlisch" at 7:30 p.m.

SFA choir concert features American composers


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Choral Union and Women's Choir of Stephen F.Austin State University will present a joint concert, "Made in the USA: Three Centuries of American Choral Music," at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 25, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

"We are pleased to be sharing with East Texas an entire concert of music by American composers," said David Howard, SFA associate director of choirs and conductor of both ensembles.

SFA to open fast food photography exhibition


Susana Raab's "A Chicken in Love, Athens, Ohio" is one of the photographs included in "Consumed: Fast Food in the US," which the SFA School of Art will open at 6 p.m. Monday, March 22, at The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House.
