Gypsy jazz quintet to perform at SFA


John Jorgenson and Charlie Chadwick of the John Jorgenson Quintet perform the group's signature gypsy jazz. The band will present a concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, in W.M. Turner Auditorium as part of the Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts' University Series.

SFA to present guest cellist in recital


Guest cellist Hannah Holman will perform a recital of trios with Christopher Ayer, SFA associate professor of clarinet, and pianist Kae Hosoda-Ayer, lecturer of collaborative piano at Baylor University, at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

SFA establishes Texas Institute for Creativity and Innovation


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - A new institute founded by Stephen F. Austin State University aims to work with area businesses and governmental agencies to promote creativity and innovation in the area's workforce.

The primary goal of the new Texas Institute for Creativity and Innovation is to encourage creativity at all levels of the university by identifying current models of innovation to be highlighted and replicated across the campus, the institute's founding director said.

SFA offers new spatial science degree


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - A new Bachelor of Science degree designed to meet the increasing demand for college graduates trained in spatial science technology is being offered by Stephen F. Austin State University this fall.

The Arthur Temple College of Forestry and Agriculture is offering the new degree program, which includes study in the fast-growing fields of geographic information systems (GIS), remote sensing (RS) and surveying and global positioning systems (GPS).

When Daryl Farmer first stumbled upon an article about bicycle touring in his high school library, little did he know how the next years of his life would change. After dropping out of college twice, the shy 20-year-old who had rarely left his home state of Colorado was ready for an adventure out west.

SFA to show 'Rivers and Tides' film


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - "Rivers and Tides," an award-winning documentary about the work of landscape sculptor Andy Goldsworthy, will be shown at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5, at The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House. Admission is free.

British artist Goldsworthy is renowned throughout the world for his ephemeral, or transient, work in ice, stone, leaves and wood, many of which he captures in photographs before they melt or otherwise become subject to the forces of nature.

SFA employees earn recognition

Employees of the Purchasing and Inventory Department at Stephen F. Austin State University recently were honored during Minority Enterprise Development Week in Dallas, an annual event held by the U.S. Department of Commerce's Minority Business Development Agency.

SFA to host fall plant sale


NACOGDOCHES, Texas --The SFA Mast Arboretum will host its annual Fabulous Fall Festival from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, at the SFA Intramural Fields on Wilson Drive.

This event features the annual fall plant sale fundraiser benefiting the SFA Mast Arboretum, Pineywoods Native Plant Center, Ruby M. Mize Azalea Garden and their various educational programs. All of the plants are produced at SFA by the staff, students and volunteers.

SFA, Chamber plan "Back Lot Bash" for freshmen

The Nacogdoches County Chamber of Commerce and Stephen F. Austin State University will roll out the red carpet for the Class of 2012 at the annual "Back Lot Bash" Thursday, Aug. 28, behind the William R. Johnson Coliseum.

SFA designates Fridays for spirit
