SFA opens award-winning play, 'The Heidi Chronicles' Tuesday


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS -The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Theatre's production of Wendy Wasserstein's "The Heidi Chronicles" that opens April 28, traces the lives of baby boomer Heidi Holland and her friends from 1965, when Heidi is 16, to 1989, when she is 40.

While the cast admits it is a challenge to portray their characters through three decades, they think the time setting makes the play appealing to a wide age range.

SFA jazz bands to present season's final concert


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Stephen F. Austin State University Swingin' Axes and Swingin' Aces jazz bands will present their season-closing concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 30, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

The Swingin' Aces, directed by SFA Assistant Professor Deb Scott, will open the concert with a program that features Chris Phillips, tuba, on Juan Tizol's "Caravan" and trombonist Andrew Klingsick on George Gershwin's "Summertime."

SFA School of Music to honor Dr. Stephen Burnaman at Extravaganza 22

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - As part of their monthly independent film series, the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Art and Friends of the Visual Arts will present an evening of three short animated films at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 1, in the Ledbetter Gallery of the Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House, 329 E. Main St. Admission is free and open to the public.

SFA bands to present free outdoor concert


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Stephen F. Austin State University bands will present a free "Concert in the Park" at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 3, on the lawn between the Wright Music Building and the Griffith Fine Arts Building on the SFA campus.

Beginning at 1 p.m., Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma, honorary band service fraternity and sorority, will be selling $5 hamburger plates that include a hamburger, chips and a drink.

"We invite the SFA and Nacogdoches community to come join us for some great music by all four bands," said Fred J. Allen, SFA director of bands.

The SFA Percussion Ensemble will present its annual spring concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 28, in Cole Concert Hall.

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The SFA Percussion Ensemble will present works from a wide variety of percussion and musical styles in its annual spring concert scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 28, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

The ensemble will open the concert with David McBride's "Quiet."

SFA names new dean of forestry and agriculture

NACOGDOCHES, Texas- Dr. Steven H. Bullard was named dean of the Arthur Temple College of Forestry and Agriculture at Stephen F. Austin State University by the Board of Regents Tuesday. He will join the faculty July 1.

SFA proceeds with new freshman residence hall, garage


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin State University Board of Regents took the first steps toward constructing a new, multi-story freshman residence hall and adjacent parking garage by selecting both an architect and construction manager for both projects at a meeting Tuesday.

SFA Wind Symphony to present 'New Day Rising' concert


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Wind Symphony of Stephen F. Austin State University will present a concert, "New Day Rising: The Music of Steven Reineke and Michael Gandolfi," at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, April 26, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

The centerpiece of the program will be Reineke's Symphony No. 1 "New Day Rising," a four-movement work about the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, explained David W. Campo, SFA associate director of bands and the Wind Symphony's director.

SFA to present bilingual children's show on Cinco de Mayo


Teatro de la Rosa will present a bilingual children's drama, "El Conejito Verde/The Green Rabbit," as part of the SFA Children's Performing Arts Series at 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 5, in W.M. Turner Auditorium.
