SFA’s Friday Night Film Series to screen ‘Rainbows End’


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Art and the Friends of the Visual Arts will present a free, one-night screening of “Rainbows End,” a 2010 documentary made by SFA filmmaking alumni Eric Heuber and Andy Cope. The screening is at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 4, in The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House.
 

SFA’s CARRI and Texas Forest Country Partnership to host economic development forum


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s Center for Applied Research and Rural Innovation along with the Texas Forest Country Partnership will host the Nacogdoches Forum on Rural Economic Development from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 1 at the Nacogdoches County Courthouse Annex.
 

SFA students go abroad to explore history and architecture in Greece


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — For nearly two weeks this summer, 16 students from various colleges and areas of study at Stephen F. Austin State University traveled to 14 cities on mainland Greece to study the country’s history, culture, economy and politics, as well as learn how to become a global citizen through travel.
 

Dr. Dan Bruton named final SFA Regents Scholar


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — As one of its final duties, the Stephen F. Austin State University Board of Regents named Dr. Dan Bruton, professor of physics and director of the SFA Planetarium, the 2023-24 Regents Scholar.

The title of Regents Scholar is the highest honor the university can bestow upon a faculty member. The honor is reserved for faculty members who are exemplary role models to the university community. The title is not an academic rank but an honorary title held for the duration of the recipient’s service to the university. 

UT System votes to assume governance of SFA


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — During a special meeting of The University of Texas System’s Board of Regents today, Regents elected to assume management and operational control of Stephen F. Austin State University effective July 28. This action will pave the way for the university to officially affiliate as a member of the UT System Sept. 1.

Kevin Eltife, UT System Board of Regents chair, and James B. Milliken, UT System chancellor, expressed thanks during the meeting to SFA's board and the Lumberjack community for their role in and support of this union.

Former SFA Board of Regents chair and energy, retail and real estate expert to address August SFA graduates


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — John R. “Bob” Garrett ’75, former Stephen F. Austin State University Board of Regents chair; SFA alumnus; and president and CEO of Fair Oil Company of Texas Inc., Broadway South Development, and Fair Management, will give the commencement address during the university’s graduation ceremony Saturday, Aug. 5.

Graduates of SFA’s doctoral educational leadership program reunite after 20 years


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Twenty years after graduating from Stephen F. Austin State University with their Doctor of Education in educational leadership, the class of 2003 returned to campus in June to celebrate their longstanding friendship and meet with current students in the same program.

SFA School of Theatre and Dance prepares to tour show at Scotland festival


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The School of Theatre and Dance at Stephen F. Austin State University will present a community preview at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 29, of an original play students will perform next month at the prestigious Edinburgh Festival Fringe in Edinburgh, Scotland.
 
The preview performance of “Grandfather Frog’s Tales of the Meadow” will be in Kennedy Auditorium on the SFA campus. The event is a fundraiser to offset travel costs of the Scotland trip.
 

SFA officers recognized for response to Rave Guardian call


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Three officers in Stephen F. Austin State University’s police department were recognized during a dual commissioning ceremony July 10 in the Baker Pattillo Student Center Grand Ballroom for their life-saving response to a distress call. 

Corporal Justin Henderson, Corporal Ian McDonald and Officer Elijah Lenderman responded to a call from the Rave Guardian application by swiftly and professionally providing the caller with life-saving support. The three were presented with a letter of commendation during the event. 

‘Alita’s Curse’ exhibition to open at Cole Art Center


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – A reception to mark the opening of the exhibition “Alita’s Curse” is planned for 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Friday, July 28, at The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House, Stephen F. Austin State University’s art gallery located in downtown Nacogdoches.  
 
The exhibition is designed to share the new fine press book written by Beverly Wright Morris in collaboration with Charles Jones, professor emeritus in the SFA School of Art. The show runs through Aug. 22.
