SFA hosts ‘Women in Entrepreneurship’ panel discussion


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — To mark National Women’s Small Business Month in October, Stephen F. Austin State University’s Arnold Center for Entrepreneurship in the Rusche College of Business recently sponsored “Women in Entrepreneurship,” a panel discussion for students, faculty and staff featuring three local female business owners.

Aubrie Smith, senior entrepreneurship major from Colleyville and president of SFA’s student-led Society for Entrepreneurial Advancement, was one of the students who attended the discussion.

20-year Army vet, Jonathan Shuskey, playing golf for SFA


NACOGDOCHES, Texas (BVM Sports) – Jonathan Shuskey has been busy since retiring from the military two years ago. The 20-year Army veteran just finished his first fall season with Stephen F. Austin State University golf after transferring from Christian Brothers University. The Lumberjacks played well but there is plenty to work on ahead of the spring season. 

“I think we got some young guys and I count myself in that when I say young guys even though I'm 40 years old,” Shuskey said. 

SFA’s Rusche College of Business names Larry Cain director of Small Business Resource Hub


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Larry Cain, former director of the Angelina College Small Business Development Center, has been named director of the Small Business Resource Hub, part of the Arnold Center for Entrepreneurship in Stephen F. Austin State University’s Rusche College of Business.

SFA’s Contemporary Ensemble to broadcast fall concert


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Contemporary Ensemble at Stephen F. Austin State University will broadcast its fall semester concert at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17, on the SFA School of Music YouTube Channel.

Directed by James Adams, the Contemporary Ensemble is one of three student performance groups in the Sound Recording Technology program in the School of Music.

“This is going to be a fantastic show,” Adams said. “This special concert will feature two bonus holiday songs.”

Works by avant-garde artist Tofel featured in exhibition


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Abstract and expressionistic drawings by American artist Jennings Tofel are featured in an exhibition showing Nov. 22 through Jan. 20 in The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House in downtown Nacogdoches.

“Jennings Tofel: Drawing Genesis,” curated by Dr. David A. Lewis, professor of art history at Stephen F. Austin State University, will be shown in the upstairs Reavley Gallery of the art center, located at 329 E. Main Street.

SFA voice students to perform opera works depicting fate, love, tragedy


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Voice students in the School of Music at Stephen F. Austin State University will present “Opera Scenes of Fate, Love and Tragedy” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

A culmination of the semester’s Fall Opera Workshop, the performance is under the direction of Nita Hudson, stage and musical director; Dr. Thomas Nixon, primary collaborative pianist; and Hyo Jeong Ham and Tate Ashby, student collaborative pianists. Works by Mozart, Verdi, Gilbert and Sullivan, among other composers, are on the program.

Kármán Ensemble to perform at SFA


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Kármán Ensemble will perform works by Vaughan Williams, Ellen Taaffe Zwilich and Justin Writer when the musicians present a guest concert at 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 13, in Cole Concert Hall on the campus of Stephen F. Austin State University.

SFA to showcase sciences and mathematics undergraduate research for community


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s College of Sciences and Mathematics invites the community to attend the fall 2022 Undergraduate Research Showcase from 4 to 6 p.m. Nov. 10 at the Cole STEM Building in the Barry E. Nelson Atrium on campus. 

The showcase will focus on the work of the college’s undergraduate researchers on topics ranging from things found on the Earth to the stars in the galaxy. 

SFA School of Music to present ‘Kaleidoscope’ concert


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The bands of Stephen F. Austin State University will present their fourth annual “Kaleidoscope’ concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 15, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus. The program will feature all three concert bands along with student chamber ensembles in a “kaleidoscope event” with no breaks between performances, according to Dr. Tamey Anglley, director of bands at SFA.

Cellist Russakovsky to perform at SFA


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Dr. Alexander Russakovsky, professor of cello and chamber music at the University of Southern Mississippi, will present a guest recital at 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 14, in the Music Recital Hall, Wright Music Building, on the campus of Stephen F. Austin State University.
