Guest artist Yoo to perform with SFA piano faculty


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Guest artist Dr. Kyung-A Yoo, associate professor of collaborative piano at Mercer University, will join piano faculty members at Stephen F. Austin State University to present “Eight-Hands Piano Concert” at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 20, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

SFA calls for entries in Texas National


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Stephen F. Austin State University School of Art’s call for entries in the 2023 Texas National Competition and Exhibition will remain open through a Jan. 31 deadline.

Texas National features an assortment of art from various media, according to Erik Ordaz, exhibition coordinator for Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House where the exhibition will show from April 14 through June 30. Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third best in show at the juror’s discretion.

SFA’s Dr. George Avery to present research at the East Texas Archeological Society meeting


NACOGDOCHES, Texas –– Stephen F. Austin State University’s Dr. George Avery, staff archeologist and cultural heritage coordinator, will present “Archeology of Two Freedom Colonies in Deep East Texas” during the East Texas Archeological Society meeting at 7 p.m. Jan. 26 in the Ferguson Building, Room G78, on the SFA campus. 

Meetings are open to the public. The society has met five times a year — primarily on the SFA campus — since 2009. 

SFA music composition alumnus named Princeton Hodder Fellow


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Joseph C. Phillips Jr., a music composition graduate of Stephen F. Austin State University, has been named one of Princeton University’s Mary Mackall Gwinn Hodder Fellows for the 2023-2024 academic year.

Princeton’s Lewis Center for the Arts recently announced the five newest recipients, which includes artist Kayla E., choreographer Moriah Evans, theater artist Modesto ‘Flako’ Jimenez, conceptual artist Charisse Pearlina Weston and composer Phillips, who studied with composition professor Dr. Stephen Lias while attending SFA.
