SFA’s Stanley Center for Speech and Language Disorders hosting weekly voice clinic to assess vocal health


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — If you ever wondered what kind of shape your voice is in, Stephen F. Austin State University’s Stanley Center for Speech and Language Disorders might have the answer. The center will host a voice screening clinic that’s free and open to the public this semester before being offered for a fee at some point after the introductory spring period.

SFA School of Human Sciences hosts annual Kentucky Derby fundraiser


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Hosted by the Stephen F. Austin State University hospitality program, the fifth annual Kentucky Derby dinner and auction is set for 6 p.m. April 14 at the Fredonia Hotel. 

Tentatively themed “Spring Day at the Derby,” the event will feature a four-course dining experience inspired by traditional Kentucky Derby dishes. A cocktail reception with a cash bar will take place at 6 p.m., and dinner will be served at 7 p.m. Silent and live auctions will take place throughout the evening. 

Graduate assistant conductor Yan showcased in Symphony Orchestra concert


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The conducting talents of Oliver Yan, graduate student in the School of Music at Stephen F. Austin State University, will be spotlighted when the Symphony Orchestra performs at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 24, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.
 
Yan, who is from Hong Kong, is earning a master’s degree in conducting from SFA. The program will include three major works:  “Der Freischütz” Overture by Carl Maria von Weber; “Les Preludes” by Franz Liszt; and L'Arlésienne Suite No. 1 by Georges Bizet.
 

SFA Sylvans win 64th annual Southern Forestry Conclave, claim fifth consecutive title


NACOGDOCHES, Texas –– The Sylvans, Stephen F. Austin State University’s forestry club and timbersports team, claimed top honors at the 64th annual Southern Forestry Conclave, marking the fifth consecutive conclave SFA has been crowned. The event was hosted by Louisiana Tech University March 9-11 at the Lincoln Parish Park in Ruston, Louisiana. 

The accomplishment marks the eighth win of the past nine conclaves and 17 wins total. 

SFA A Cappella Choir to present ‘The Spark Within Us’


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The A Cappella Choir at Stephen F. Austin State University will present the concert program “The Spark Within Us” at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 21 in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.
 
The program features music of Johann Sebastian Bach, Moses Hogan, Wolfram Buchenberg, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Heitor Villa-Lobos, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Dan Forrest and more.
 

SFA music faculty, students to present ‘Celleuphoria’


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The School of Music at Stephen F. Austin State University will present “Celleuphoria” at 4 p.m. Sunday, March 19, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.
 
“Celleuphoria” is a concert featuring the cello in “an intense emotional state viewed from different angles of time through the eyes of highly regarded composers,” according to Dr. Evgeni Raychev, cello instructor at SFA. The concert will feature compositions from the Baroque, Romantic and post-Romantic periods, as well as the 20th and 21st centuries.
 

Sean Kingston to headline SFA Student Activities Association’s SpringFest


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Jamaican-American hip-hop artist Sean Kingston will be the featured performer at Stephen F. Austin State University’s SpringFest planned for 8 p.m. April 14 in Johnson Coliseum. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m.
 
The concert will be hosted by SFA’s Student Activities Association and will serve, in part, to make up for the last-minute cancellation of the fall Homecoming concert.
 

SFA’s Denis to present horn recital ‘New Beginnings’


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Dr. Andrea Denis, assistant professor of horn at Stephen F. Austin State University, will present “New Beginnings,” a recital of works by Paul Basler, Verne Reynolds, Elizabeth Raum, Stephen Lias and John Dickson, at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, March 18, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.
