SFA entrepreneurship program, center named a top emerging entrepreneurship program in country


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s entrepreneurship academic program and Arnold Center for Entrepreneurship in the Rusche College of Business were collectively named one of the top three emerging entrepreneurship programs in the nation by the United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship.

Renowned evolutionary biologist to speak for SFA’s Darwin Day event


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — In a celebration of scientific curiosity and the contributions of biologists, Stephen F. Austin State University’s Department of Biology is set to celebrate Darwin Day Feb. 12 with special guest speaker Dr. David Hillis from The University of Texas at Austin.

Embracing the spirit of inquiry that defines Charles Darwin's groundbreaking contributions to evolutionary theory, Hillis will give his talk on Darwin’s “Tree of Life” hypothesis.  

SFA to premiere Silvas’ ‘The Russian at Christmas’ feature film


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The School of Art at Stephen F. Austin State University will premiere a film written, directed, and edited by SFA graduate student Armando Silvas Jr. when it presents “The Russian at Christmas” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 5, in W.M. Turner Auditorium, Griffith Fine Arts Building, on the SFA campus.

The film was selected to be produced as the School of Art filmmaking program’s 2023 SFA summer feature. Silvas’ “The Russian at Christmas” is a feature-length action/comedy holiday film about a Russian hitman who tracks down a mall Santa on Christmas Eve.

SFA School of Theatre and Dance to present ‘The 39 Steps’


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Who doesn’t like a spy thriller? Lovers of comic theater and classic movies will be in their entertainment element at the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Theatre and Dance’s production of “The 39 Steps,” a parody play adapted by Patrick Barlow from the novel by John Buchan and the film by Alfred Hitchcock.
 

SFA senior theatre student Aguirre to direct Guirgis’ dark comedy


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Theatre and Dance will present the student-directed full-length, dark comedy “The Motherf**ker with the Hat” by award-winning playwright Stephen Adly Guirgis at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 16, and at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, in the Black Box Theater in the Griffith Fine Arts Building, SFA campus.
 

Venezuelan percussionist to perform at SFA


NACOGDOCHES, Texas –  Venezuelan percussionist Alirio José Torrealba will perform at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 14, in Cole Concert Hall on the campus of Stephen F. Austin State University.
 
His recital will feature performances of “Entrevero” for Maracas and Tape by Guasaka4; “Pajarillo Flamenco” by Juan Carlos Contreras; and “Temazcal” (maracas and tape) by Javier Alvarez. He will also conduct a maracas master class for SFA’s percussion studio.
 

SFA’s Center for Applied Research and Rural Innovation to host Rural Texas Travel and Tourism Conference


NACOGDOCHES, Texas –– Stephen F. Austin State University’s Center for Applied Research and Rural Innovation, in association with the Texas Forest Country Partnership and Texas Forest Trail Region, will host the Rural Texas Travel and Tourism Conference March 7 in the Baker Pattillo Student Center Grand Ballroom on SFA’s campus. 

Hicks’ ‘Notes for String Theory’ series to show in Las Vegas


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – A solo exhibition of works by Candace Hicks, associate professor of art in the School of Art at Stephen F. Austin State University, will open in mid-February in the The Artspace Gallery, North Las Vegas campus of the College of Southern Nevada.

Hicks’ exhibition features work from her series “Notes for String Theory.” The show runs Feb. 16 through April 20. An artist talk and reception is planned for 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 26.

Hick explains that her work centers on “being a reader of fiction.”

Spots open in SFA’s Stanley Center for Speech and Language Disorder’s Little Jacks program


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s Stanley Center for Speech and Language Disorders has openings in the Little Jacks program for children ages three to four experiencing communication concerns.

SFA to host second annual ‘Words of Art’ collaborative exhibition


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS – Formerly a course at Stephen F. Austin State University called “Pen & Pigment,” “Words of Art” is a student organization-led collaborative event that presents contributors with publication and exhibition opportunities.

Students who participated in “Pen & Pigment” engaged with one another to produce cohesive paintings and poetry that effectively correlated their disciplines.
