NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Six Stephen F. Austin State University students received top honors at the American Advertising Federation-Houston Student Conference held Nov. 3 and 4.

The federation comprises professionals from advertising, marketing and communications disciplines.

Students from SFA’s School of Art, Department of Management and Marketing, and Department of Mass Communication competed during the conference.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Music Preparatory Division in the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music has announced its fall recital schedule.

Piano students of SFA music major instructors and students of Dr. Mario Ajero will perform at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 3, in Music Recital Hall in the Tom and Peggy Wright Music Building on the SFA campus.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Wind Ensemble at Stephen F. Austin State University will present the program “Americana” at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 3, in W.M. Turner Auditorium on the SFA campus.

“This concert features music from different parts of America,” said Fred J. Allen, director of bands and of the Wind Ensemble.

The featured work on the program will be “Outdoor Overture” by Aaron Copland, who wrote both the orchestral and band versions of the piece in 1938.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Christmas celebration in the Oldest Town in Texas will be more spectacular than ever this year with a much-anticipated holiday-themed performance of the popular Annie Moses Band.

The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and its 2017-18 University Series will present “Christmas with the Annie Moses Band” at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 12, in W.M. Turner Auditorium.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Friends of the Visual Arts at Stephen F. Austin State University continues to make dreams come true for young Mexican artists who want to attend SFA but have limited economic resources.

For several years, the FVA has awarded scholarships to students from Mexico who would like to enroll in the School of Art’s ceramics program but could not afford to do so. These opportunities exist in part due to the influence of SFA Professor of Ceramics Piero Fenci and his collaboration with the ceramics program at La Universidad Autonoma de Chihuahua, Mexico.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas — The SFA Gardens will host a garden seminar, “Deck the Halls: Using Evergreens to Decorate for the Holidays,” from 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Dec. 2, at the Brundrett Conservation Education Building at the SFA Pineywoods Native Plant Center, 2900 Raguet St.

Evergreen branches and garlands once served as symbols of enduring life and a fruitful year to come. Join Dawn Stover, research associate with SFA Gardens, to learn how to create elegant wreaths and garlands using materials from the garden.  

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS – Each spring, the Congressional Institute sponsors a nationwide high school visual art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the nation and in each congressional district. The competition provides an opportunity for members of Congress to encourage and recognize the artistic talents of their young constituents.

The artwork submitted for the competition by students living within U.S. Rep. Louie Gohmert’s congressional district will be displayed in Griffith Gallery on the campus of Stephen F. Austin State University.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music will present guest artist Sidney A. King performing a double bass recital at 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 27, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

King, who is associate professor of double bass and music education in the University of Louisville School of Music, will present a recital that he describes as “a model of a personal statement about what an artist has to offer, much like an exhibition by a visual artist or painter.”
