After attending a conference at the University of New Mexico in 2012, a Stephen F. Austin State University faculty member became inspired by the concept of peer mentoring - so much so that she developed a program for SFA theatre students that has proven successful and continues to grow and evolve.

CC Conn's mentoring program utilizes highly qualified junior- and senior-level SFA students as peer mentors.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Seven Stephen F. Austin State University faculty members will be honored this week for their outstanding contributions to the classroom during the Teaching Excellence Awards Convocation, which recognizes one individual from each of SFA’s six colleges and a seventh chosen by the Faculty Senate.

The convocation will be from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Thursday, April 4, in the Baker Pattillo Student Center Regents’ Suites A and B. The event is free and open to the public.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The SRT Contemporary Ensemble at Stephen F. Austin State University will present a rhythm and blues concert at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 10, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

Among the selections to be performed are “Celebrate” by Anderson.Paak, “Funky Drummer” by James Brown, “Killing Me Softly” by The Fugees, and “Hallelujah! I Love Her So” by Ray Charles.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Stephen F. Austin State University's College of Sciences and Mathematics will host the fifth annual Women in STEM Luncheon and Style Show at noon Tuesday, April 9, in the Baker Pattillo Student Center Grand Ballroom.

Doors open at 11 a.m. for a gallery walk poster presentation highlighting STEM research accomplishments by SFA students and faculty.

The luncheon and style show is a scholarship fundraising event benefiting students committed to the advancement of women pursuing STEM degrees at SFA.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Dr. Deb Scott, professor of trombone at Stephen F. Austin State University, will present a recital at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 11, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

Among the varied works to be featured is "Pearls II” by Roland Szentpáli, a Hungarian composer and world-renowned tuba player. This second piece in his series of three “Pearls” was originally composed for either trombone or euphonium, but is usually played by a euphonium player, according to Scott.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Dr. Abby Yeakle Held, adjunct professor of oboe at Stephen F. Austin State University, will present the recital program “Celebrating the Music of American Composers” at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 12, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

With a goal of presenting a program of only American repertoire, Held selected a "made-in-the-USA" theme featuring the music of William Grant Still, Samuel Barber, George Gershwin, Gian Carlo Menotti, Douglas Moore and Alyssa Morris.

Performing with Held will be SFA collaborative pianist Hyun Ji Oh.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Michelle White, senior curator at the Menil Collection in Houston, will serve as juror for the 25th Texas National, Stephen F. Austin State University’s acclaimed art competition and exhibition, which opens April 13 and runs through June 9 in The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House in downtown Nacogdoches.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Sitting on the sidelines has never been an option for Dr. Jason Reese, sports business program coordinator and assistant professor at Stephen F. Austin State University.

After receiving his bachelor’s degree, Reese worked with baseball marketing and sales for the Round Rock Express, the Triple-A Affiliate of the Houston Astros. While working toward his master’s degree, Reese taught a few game-changing classes.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s SFA Gardens will host the monthly Theresa and Les Reeves Lecture Series at 7 p.m. April 11 in the Brundrett Conservation Education Building at the Pineywoods Native Plant Center, located at 2900 Raguet St.

Daniel Cunningham, a horticulturist for Texas A&M AgriLife Research Extension’s Water University program, will present “Eat the Yard: A Guide to Edible Landscape Plants.”
