East Texas Research Center sponsoring contest


The East Texas Research Center at Stephen F. Austin State University is sponsoring an "I Found it in the Archives" essay and video contest to showcase how archived materials positively impact people's lives.

"We're seeking entrants who have found something special in our collections - records, documents, photos, recordings, a meaningful item or treasure," said ETRC Director Linda Reynolds. "If it has meaning to you, it has meaning to us and is a wonderful basis for your entry."

SFA Gardens Lecture Series to feature bluebird society co-founder


The SFA Gardens at Stephen F. Austin State University will host its monthly Theresa and Les Reeves Lecture Series at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 20, in Room 110 of the Agriculture Building located at 1924 Wilson Dr. Naturalist Keith Kridler of Mt. Pleasant will present "Bluebirds Chase My Blues Away."

International musicians to compete at SFA


Over $15,000 in prize money will be awarded to winners of the2011 George and Peggy Schmidbauer Young Artist String Competition presented by the SFA School of Music Saturday, Jan. 22, and Sunday, Jan. 23. SFA quarterback Jeremy Moses named 2010 Walter Payton Award winner

FRISCO, Texas - Stephen F. Austin senior quarterback Jeremy Moses has been named the 2010 Walter Payton Award winner announced the Sports Network at the annual awards banquet in Frisco, Texas Thursday evening. A two-time All-American, Moses becomes the first Southland Conference player to receive the honor in the award's 24-year history.

Public invited to international string competition at SFA


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Violin, viola and cello players from nine countries will be competing for $15,000 in prize money during the George and Peggy Schmidbauer Young Artist String Competition presented by the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music Saturday, Jan. 22, and Sunday, Jan. 23.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for East Texans to hear some of the world's best young string players," said Gene H. Moon, director of orchestral studies at SFA and of the competition.

SFA plans MLK Day of Service


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin State University offices of Leadership and Service and Multicultural Affairs will hold the second annual MLK Day of Service beginning at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 17, in the Twilight Ballroom of the Baker Pattillo Student Center.

The theme of the event will be "What's Your Legacy?" and service projects will center on helping local nursing homes and senior centers. About 150 student volunteers are needed to help host events and interact with nursing home residents, and participants will receive a free lunch and event T-shirt.

SFA to screen 'Helvetica'


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - As a part of its monthly independent film series, the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Art and Friends of the Visual Arts will present a free, one-night screening of "Helvetica" at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 7, at The Cole Art Center @ the Old Opera House, 329 E. Main St. in downtown Nacogdoches.
