SFA faculty to present 'Opera-Inspired Works for Flute and Piano'


Pianist Geneva Fung and flutist Christina Guenther, both of the SFA School of Music, will present a recital of opera-inspired works at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 15, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

SFA orchestra concert features student winners


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Winners of the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music's annual Concerto/Aria and Composition Contests will be featured during SFA's Orchestra of the Pines' "Center Stage" concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 19, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

Bedding fire at SFA residence hall


A small fire was extinguished in a residence room on the second floor of Steen Hall during the early morning hours. There were no serious injuries. The fire broke out when a lamp fell on a bed and ignited the bedding. Students were evacuated across the street to the East College Cafeteria. Although the fire was small and extinguished quickly, there is water damage to the first and second floors. Cleanup is underway. Students on the undamaged floors have been allowed to move back to their rooms. Students who reside on the damaged floors were relocated to other rooms.

SFA faculty member to sing in Carnegie Hall

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Dr. David Howard, associate director of choral activities at Stephen F. Austin State University, has been selected from a nationwide pool of applicants to be a part of a large chorus performing Hector Berlioz's "Grande Messe des morts, Op. 5" (or Requiem) at Carnegie Hall on Sunday, Feb. 13.

Robert Spano, music director of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, will conduct the work.

SFA hospitality students working at Super Bowl

Every college student fantasizes about landing their dream job after graduation; however, for a couple of SFA students, that dream is already becoming a reality.

Hospitality majors Shayna Borhaug of Lake Dallas and Cordero Chavira of Jacksonville have both scored their first jobs in the industry helping coordinate this year's Super Bowl at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington.

SFA to stage student-directed absurdist play


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Theatre will present a student-directed production of Arthur Kopit's "Oh Dad, Poor Dad, Mamma's Hung You in the Closet and I'm Feelin' So Sad" at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 11, and at 2 and 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 12. All performances are in the Downstage Theatre located on the first floor of the Griffith Fine Arts Building.

SFA bands to present 'British Band Classics'


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Wind Symphony and Symphonic Band of the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music will present a joint concert, "British Band Classics," at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 8, in W.M. Turner Auditorium on the SFA campus.

The program features works by composers who are British or have significant ties to the United Kingdom, explained Brett A. Richardson, SFA assistant director of bands.

SFA A Cappella Choir to present preview concert


The SFA A Cappella Choir is one of two university choirs selected to perform at the upcoming Texas Music Educators Association Convention in San Antonio. The choir will present a preview concert in Nacogdoches at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 7, in Cole Concert Hall.

As a preview to its performance at the 2011 Texas Music Educators Association Convention, the A Cappella Choir of Stephen F. Austin State University will present a concert at 7:30 p.m.

Guest pianist to perform 'Music of Franz Liszt' at SFA


Guest pianist Jura Margulis will present "Music of Franz Liszt" at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 10, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus. The recital is a part of the SFA School of Music's Cole Performing Arts Series.
