Guest flute recital slated at SFA

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and School of Music will present Sarah Frisof in a guest flute recital at 6 p.m. Friday, April 1, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus. The recital is free and open to the public.

SFA to screen 'A Man Named Pearl'


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - As part of its monthly independent film series, the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Art and SFA Friends of the Visual Arts will present a free screening of "A Man Named Pearl" at 7 p.m. Friday, April 1, at The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House, 329 E. Main St. in downtown Nacogdoches.

SFA Gardens to host backyard birding seminar


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin State University Pineywoods Native Plant Center will host a two-part garden seminar, "How to Identify and Attract Backyard Birds," from 6:30 to 8 p.m. March 25 and from 8 to 11 a.m. March 26.

Participants will enjoy a Friday evening lecture with Cliff Shackelford, ornithologist with Texas Parks and Wildlife, regarding identification of common local birds. On Saturday, Shackelford will lead a birding stroll through the plant center property and to the nearby Shackelford home to visit the family's backyard made "for the birds."

Pre-Columbian Horticulture topic of upcoming SFA Gardens Lecture


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The SFA Gardens at Stephen F. Austin State University will host its monthly Theresa and Les Reeves Lecture Series at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 24, in Room 110 of the Agriculture Building located at 1924 Wilson Drive. Dr. Alice Le Duc will present a lecture on pre-Columbian horticulture.

SFA's Original Cast to present folk song revue


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Original Cast, a musical cabaret troupe from the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Theatre, will present four performances of "Blowin' in the Wind: Poets of the Folk Song Era" Thursday, March 24, through Saturday, March 26, in the Downstage Theatre of the Griffith Fine Arts Building on the SFA campus.

SFA to present popular operetta, 'Die Fledermaus'


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - An enjoyable evening of light comedy, beautiful music and powerful voices is in store for anyone attending Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music's upcoming production of "Die Fledermaus," according to Dr. Deborah Dalton, SFA associate professor of music and the operetta's stage director.

SFA vocal and orchestral students will present Johann Strauss II's operetta at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 31, through Saturday, April 2, in W.M. Turner Auditorium on the SFA campus.

'Pen & Pigment' exhibition features SFA art and poetry


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - A collaborative project between Stephen F. Austin State University student poets and artists will culminate in the opening of the "Third Annual Pen & Pigment Show" at 6 p.m. Friday, March 25, in Griffith Gallery, located in Griffith Fine Arts Building, Room 208.

For the project, advanced poetry students each wrote a poem that was inspired by a partner-student's digital print, and the typography students each created a digital print that was inspired by a partner-student's poem.

SFA Wind Ensemble concert features guest conductor


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Frank B. Wickes, director emeritus of bands at Louisiana State University, will guest conduct the Stephen F. Austin State University Wind Ensemble during its concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 25, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

Under Wicke's baton, the ensemble will present Percy Grainger's "Irish Tune from the County Derry." "Audiences will recognize this as the song 'Danny Boy,'" said Fred J. Allen, SFA director of bands.

Community invited to attend sexual assault symposium, be part of documentary


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - His mother, ex-wife and daughter are all victims of separate sexual assaults, and now Stephen F. Austin State University cinematography graduate student Thomas Church is using his craft to create a documentary he hopes eventually will be able to help victims of such crimes.

The full-length documentary, "Talk About It," which is Church's Master of Fine Arts' thesis project, is scheduled for completion and distribution in November.
