The American Red Cross Lifeguard course at SFA teaches you the skills necessary to:

  • prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies
  • and provide professional-level care until emergency medical services arrive for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses.

Participants who successfully earn their lifeguard certification may be eligible for employment at Campus Recreation

Weekend certification

This three-day course is offered during the spring semester, with the first session held on a Friday evening, carrying through Saturday and Sunday. The Wednesday evening prior, there is a required in-person pre-course skills test.

Before the weekend certification course begins,  you must:

  • Successfully complete the online Introduction to the Lifeguarding course prior to the pre-course skills session. The pre-course skill session includes a swim-tread-swim event and brick retrieval.
  • Obtain all participant materials before entering the first session of the course. Materials consist of the lifeguarding course presentation and the digital American Red Cross Lifeguarding Manual.
