University leadership

Dr. Baker Pattillo is the current SFA president. SFA has been a major part of his life for more than 50 years: he began as a student, became an administrator and, since January 2007, has led the institution as its president.

Dr. Pattillo was sagaciously elected by his classmates at Arp High School as “most likely to succeed.” He earned an Associate of Arts degree from Tyler Junior College before enrolling at SFA, where he received a Bachelor of Science in English and history and a Master of Education.

After graduating from SFA, Dr. Pattillo joined the university as assistant director of placement and student financial aid in 1966. He earned his Doctor of Educational Administration from Texas A&M University in 1971 and continued to advance in his service to SFA as director of placement and student financial aid, dean of student services, vice president for student affairs, and vice president for university affairs before being named interim president in July 2006.

With a lifestyle that always has been “all-SFA-all-the-time,” Dr. Pattillo continually makes a fresh commitment to help improve the university – not only for current and future students, but also for alumni and the Nacogdoches community. He and his wife, Dr. Janice Pattillo, were honored by the Nacogdoches County Chamber of Commerce as Citizens of the Year in 2011. The Baker Pattillo Student Center is named in tribute to the SFA president’s service to the institution.

Dr. Pattillo is a former chairman of the Southland Conference board of directors and was named a member of the National Collegiate Athletics Association Division 1 Board of Directors in 2013. Known as a strong advocate dedicated to ensuring the academic and athletic success of student-athletes, he was elected by the presidents of fellow Southland Conference universities to serve on the board, which is responsible for establishing and directing policies for the division. The board includes the presidents of Rice University, the University of California at Los Angeles, Michigan State University and Dartmouth College, and Dr. Pattillo is one of only two Southland Conference representatives ever named to the board. In addition to overseeing the Academic Progress Rate and Academic Performance Census, the board works to ensure gender and ethnic diversity in the leadership structure and oversees the NCAA's annual budget process.

Dr. Pattillo represents the Southland Conference on the Division I Presidential Advisory Group, providing input to the board and NCAA staff. He also represents the Southland Conference as a member of the FCS CEO Group, a body that provides oversight of FCS football. He previously served as chair of the Southland Conference Institutional Representatives.

In addition to his service to SFA, Nacogdoches and the NCAA, Dr. Pattillo is responsible for his family’s pet dachshund, named Doches. The Doches Dog Pageant is held each April on the SFA campus, offering SFA students an opportunity to show off and relax with their canine companions before final exams begin.
