Incoming Student Success Checklist

Incoming Students

Complete these steps to ensure a smooth, productive first advising appointment and avoid registration holds.

Phase 1: After Admission

  • Satisfy TSI requirements: Complete the Texas Success Initiative (TSI) Assessment or submit official exemption documentation (such as qualifying SAT, ACT, or dual credit scores) to prevent registration delays.
  • Submit official high school and college transcripts: Have your high school and any colleges where you earned dual credit or early college credit send official transcripts to the Office of Admissions.
  • Send credit by exam scores (AP/IB/CLEP/TCB): Request official score reports (e.g., Texas College Bridge certificates, AP exam scores, CLEP results) to be sent directly to SFA for prerequisite clearances and course credit evaluation.

Phase 2: Before Your Advising Appointment

  • Submit unofficial transcripts: If you are currently enrolled in high school, dual credit, or community college courses whose final grades haven't posted yet, email unofficial copies or current grade reports to your assigned advisor. This ensures we don't duplicate coursework on your schedule.
  • Review degree maps: Look through the university catalog for the degree map your intended major (or explore focus areas if undeclared) to get familiar with foundational coursework.
  • Prepare your questions: Draft a list of questions regarding degree plans, double majors, minors, career aspirations, or academic accommodations.

Phase 3: At Your Advising Appointment

  • Access your tech: Make sure you can log in to mySFA, check that your device audio/video works (if meeting virtually), and have your student ID number handy.
  • Build your schedule: Work collaboratively with your advisor to finalize your first-semester class schedule and register for your courses.
