SFA Department of Earth Sciences and Geologic Resources to celebrate Earth Science Day


NACOGDOCHES, Texas –– Stephen F. Austin State University’s Department of Earth Sciences and Geologic Resources will host an Earth Science Day event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 8 in the Cole STEM Building atrium.

This free event is open to the public. Visitors who have minerals, rocks or fossils they would like to have identified are encouraged to bring them for a free identification service. There will be geology-themed activities for all ages, including dinosaur races, cupcake geology and an augmented reality sand table.

SFA breaks single-day application record, waives application fee through Dec. 1


NACOGDOCHES, Texas –– Stephen F. Austin State University recently broke its single-day application record with 2,700 submitted applications thanks in part to Free College Application Week.

Administered by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board the second full week of October, the initiative helps Texas residents apply to public colleges at no cost.

SFA Schlief School of Accountancy launches new advisory council to elevate student success and industry engagement


Stephen F. Austin State University's Schlief School of Accountancy, housed within the Nelson Rusche College of Business, has announced the formation of its inaugural advisory council — an initiative aimed at strengthening the bridge between academia and the rapidly evolving accounting profession.

With programs serving 270 students across its Bachelor of Business Administration in accounting and Master of Professional Accountancy degrees, the school is committed to staying ahead of industry trends, and this new council marks a strategic step forward.

SFA education student is first preservice teacher selected for national women’s suffrage history program


NACOGDOCHES, Texas –– Sophia Clinger, an education studies senior at Stephen F. Austin State University, was one of 18 college students selected from 500 applicants to participate in the Women and the Constitution conference hosted by the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia recently. Clinger, of Crosby, is the first preservice teacher ever to be selected by the center for the honor.

Historic derringer linked to Sam Houston donated to Stone Fort Museum at SFA


NACOGDOCHES, Texas –– A derringer pistol believed to have been given by Sam Houston to an East Texas physician in the mid-1800s was donated to the Stone Fort Museum at Stephen F. Austin State University Monday.

The firearm, which had been stored in a paper bag for nearly 90 years, was donated by descendants of Dr. John Newton Fall, a family physician and member of the Texas Senate from 1857 to 1861.

SFA students selected to participate in national research program


NACOGDOCHES, Texas –– The Council on Undergraduate Research has chosen Stephen F. Austin State University to be one of the more than 30 U.S. higher education institutions that will participate in the council’s 2025-26 Scholars Transforming Through Research Program. The competitive, application-based program is a professional development opportunity for teams consisting of a campus representative and one to four undergraduate students.

SFA student-run Fall Plant Fair to feature Texas gardening author


NACOGDOCHES, Texas –– Students in Stephen F. Austin State University’s horticulture program will host the seventh annual Fall Plant Fair from 5 to 7 p.m. Oct. 23 at the SFA Plantery, located at 1924 Wilson Drive behind the Agriculture Building. Plants available for purchase include a variety of winter annuals, native perennials, houseplants and succulents, all of which thrive in the East Texas area.

SFA awarded $134K grant to support parenting students


NACOGDOCHES, Texas –– Stephen F. Austin State University has been awarded a $134,200 grant through the Data-to-Action for Parenting Students Grant program.

The grant is administered by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board in partnership with the Urban Institute, a nonprofit research organization that provides data and evidence to advance upward mobility and improve the well-being of families and communities.

Prince tribute to open 2025-26 University Series


NACOGDOCHES, Texas –– Marshall Charloff & The Purple xPeRIeNCE, known as the most authentic celebration of Prince in the world, will kick off Stephen F. Austin State University’s University Series at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 24 at Turner Auditorium in the Griffith Fine Arts Building.

The band returns to Nacogdoches following tremendous success of their 2018 University Series performance and enthusiastic response from the university and surrounding communities.

SFA student investment portfolio grows to $2.73M


NACOGDOCHES, Texas –– Stephen F. Austin State University students are managing an investment portfolio valued at approximately $2.73 million following a recent contribution from The University of Texas/Texas A&M Investment Management Company to the Mast Student Investment Roundtable Fund in the Nelson Rusche College of Business.
