Austin State University’s Department of Education Studies traveled to San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, for a summer study abroad program, immersing themselves in Mexican culture while teaching local students through hands-on learning experiences.
SFA sets new fall semester record for undergraduate applications
NACOGDOCHES, Texas –– For the first time in its history, Stephen F. Austin State University has received over 20,000 undergraduate applications for a fall semester, marking a 17% increase over fall 2024 applications and a 67% rise since 2019.
SFA announces 2025-26 University Series lineup
NACOGDOCHES, Texas –– Stephen F. Austin State University’s 2025-26 University Series returns with a lineup of nationally acclaimed artists. All performances will be held at 7:30 p.m. in Turner Auditorium, Griffith Fine Arts Building.
This season, themed “A Season to Share,” brings the Nacogdoches, campus and surrounding communities together through the arts with high-quality performances spanning from blues and Celtic music to stand-up comedy and holiday traditions. The series also will feature a special encore presentation of “Nutcracker! Christmas Ballet.”
SFA launches Caring Jacks suicide prevention training

Austin State University’s Counseling Services is now offering students, faculty and staff a new suicide prevention training program called Caring Jacks to create an environment where open conversations about suicide are met with compassion and support, helping build a community of care and connection.
SFA alumnus and Tomberlain Insurance Group president to speak at summer undergraduate commencement ceremony
NACOGDOCHES, Texas –– Cole Tomberlain, president of The Tomberlain Insurance Group based in Longview, will give the commencement address during Stephen F. Austin State University’s summer graduation ceremony for undergraduates at 3 p.m. Friday, Aug. 8, in Johnson Coliseum. All master’s and doctoral candidates will receive their degrees during the Graduate Studies ceremony at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 7, in Turner Auditorium, Griffith Fine Arts Building.

SFA adds orientation session to meet surge in enrollment

SFA Gardens to receive grant for trail remodel
NACOGDOCHES, Texas –– Stephen F. Austin State University will receive a 2025 Recreational Trail Program grant from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department following an environmental review and grant agreement.
Dr. David Creech, SFA Gardens director, and Dr. David Kulhavy, professor in the College of Forestry and Agriculture, serve as principal investigator and co-investigator, respectively, for the project titled "Building a Path to the Future at the SFA Gardens."
SFA’s East Texas Research Center, The Sons of the Republic of Texas partner to preserve the area’s role in Texas Revolution

Austin State University’s East Texas Research Center recently received a $3,000 donation from The Sons of the Republic of Texas as part of the group’s efforts to commemorate the role played by the Department of Nacogdoches in the Mexican state of Coahuila y Tejas — an area that encompassed all of Texas east of the Trinity River — in the Texas Revolution.
SFA faculty member earns 2025 Inspirational Geoscience Educator Award
NACOGDOCHES, Texas –– The American Association of Petroleum Geologists, a nonprofit foundation supporting educational and scientific activities in the field of geology, has named Dr. Julie Bloxson, associate professor of earth sciences and geologic resources at Stephen F. Austin State University, as its 2025 Inspirational Geoscience Educator.
