Understanding the different tutoring methods
Our tutoring methods include supplemental instruction (SI groups), walk-in tables and the help with writing. All tutoring services are drop-in (no sign-up required)! Click on the thumbnails below to learn more about each method.
Supplemental Instruction (SI Groups)
Led by a student who has already taken the course and has been personally chosen by the course instructor to be an SI leader.
This tutoring method offers a second look at the class material through informal, interactive sessions designed to help you understand concepts and practice problems so you’re prepared for whatever the test might bring.
Bring any materials associated with the class. You may attend SI Groups for course sections that serve an instructor other than yours. This service requires no appointment and can be used as often as you like.
Food and drink are allowed during an SI Group session! The session lasts 50 minutes, but you are welcome to arrive late or leave early if needed.
Walk-In Tables
A great place to prepare and study for your classes! Each walk-in table has designated hours in which it is open, during which time you can stay for as long as you need.
Tutors for the walk-in tables can answer questions, direct you in problem solving, review concepts, or just be available if you have a question while studying. This service requires no appointment and can be used as often as you like.

Writing tutors: what to expect
Tutoring services do not include editing your paper. Writing tutors will:
- guide you on specific kinds of sentence level support and overall essay coherence
- clarify grammar rules
- explain writing conventions
- guide you as you revise and edit your own sentences
- and discuss style, language and rhetorical choices.
