Overview

Ready to elevate your expertise in helping children, youth, adults and families? What factors influence psychological health across various environments?

Integrated approach

This 99-credit-hour program provides primary training in school psychology while also preparing students for clinical/counseling practice. Our integrated approach blends evidence-based assessment and intervention with real-world application.

Coursework in this degree plan includes cognitive development, neuroscience, advanced assessment and therapeutic techniques. Your training culminates in nine hours of practicum, six hours of internship and nine hours of dissertation work.

Preparation for professional licensure

You'll become knowledgeable and skilled in the health service specialty areas of school and clinical/counseling psychology. Delivering effective evidence-based clinical services and becoming competent in research will set you apart as you enter the industry.

Upon graduation, you’ll be eligible to apply for state licensure as a Licensed Psychologist or Licensed School Psychologist.

Clinical training and research

Education extends beyond the classroom.

Hands-on clinical and field-based experiences with supervisors in individual and small-group settings will refine your professional practice.

Apply to the school and health service psychology doctoral program

The GRE is not required.

To be eligible for consideration into the program, you must:

  • meet SFA's graduate school requirements
  • have a 3.25 GPA or higher on all completed graduate coursework
  • and hold a degree in psychology or closely-related field from a regionally accredited college or university.

Ready? Complete the graduate school application by March 1.
Selected applicants will participate in a livestream interview with the graduate program committee.

If you do not have a master's degree, you must:

  • meet SFA's graduate school requirements
  • have a 3.0 GPA or higher on all undergraduate coursework
  • and be one of the following:
    • in your final year of undergraduate work
    • or have 95 or more semester hours of undergraduate work at SFA and be approved as an overlap student.

All applicants will submit the following with your application to the program:

  • your current curriculum vitae
    • include all previous degrees and experiences in the fields of psychology and education
  • three professional references
  • essay that tells the story of your life and your character. Focused on two main things:
    • Who you are today: How have your life experiences shaped you into the kind of person who will succeed as a school or professional psychologist?
    • Your journey and goals: What challenges have you faced (social, educational, cultural, or economic) and how did you overcome them to reach your current point? What do you hope to achieve in the future?
