Keeping Lumberjacks safe
Safety is your number one concern, so we’ve made it our number one priority.
We understand that students and their families want to know their college campus is safe — it is, after all, their home for three to five (ish) years. We have a comprehensive emergency operations plan that prepares us to handle virtually any campus emergency, from isolated incidents to full-scale natural disasters.
The University of Texas System Police Department at SFA does more than keep a watchful eye — they’ve worked hard to update resources and offer services that protect our students. Read about each below.
How to stay safe on campus
We have a variety of services and programs in place to help keep all Lumberjacks safe:
- Automated electronic defibrillators (AEDs)
- Crime prevention tips
- Emergency call boxes (blue-light phones)
- Evening shuttle services
- JackAlert emergency notification system
- Outdoor siren system
- Police escorts
- Rave Guardian mobile phone app
- Safety and crime prevention programs
- Vehicle assists (lockouts/jump-starts)
Campus emergencies
In the event of an emergency, Lumberjacks are alerted by the JackAlert campus emergency notification system. Outdoor sirens may also be sounded, depending on the nature of the emergency.
Campus-wide emergencies
- Severe weather event
- Environmental hazard situation
- Active emergency on campus (imminent threat to campus safety other than weather)
Read about what to do in the event of a campus-wide emergency on the UTS-SFA police department's Emergency Procedures webpage.
Emergency notifications
JackAlerts (text, email, phone)
You must register your device to receive JackAlerts.
Once you’ve registered, alert calls, emails and text messages are sent to every device, number and address that has been entered on JackAlert. Visit the Jack Alert webpage for information on registering.
This campus notification system is in compliance with the Clery Act requirement to provide students, faculty and staff with timely notification of crimes that represent a serious or continuing threat to the campus community and heighten awareness (university policy 13.22).
Outdoor siren system (severe weather, active emergency)
Outdoor sirens are sounded when there is severe weather or an active emergency situation on campus. The sirens are located on the roof of the Steen Library. While the sirens may be heard inside some buildings on campus, the system is only designed to provide an audible alert outdoors.
There are two different sirens. You can listen to them on the Outdoor Siren webpage.
The siren system is tested on the first Wednesday of each month at approximately 11:55 a.m.
